"The Domestic Notes" by Bishop Maciej Wołonczewski (Motiejus Valančius) as a contribution to the knowledge of the social and linguistic situation on the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania under the rule of the tsarsThe article introduces the interesting, albeit controversial, figure of Maciej Wołonczewski (Motiejus Valančius), an important member of the nineteenth-century clergy, and his Polish-language legacy. The bishop of Samogitia’s "Domestic Notes" document persecutions of the Catholic Church in Lithuania after the November and January Uprisings at the hands of Russian Tzarist authorities, and reflect the state of Polish language and its social functions in this historical period.Valančius’ manuscripts, published in the volume edited by the historians Aldona Prašmantaitė and Jan Jurkiewicz [Motiejus Valančius, Namų užrašai (The Domestic Notes), Vilnius: Baltos Lankos, 2003], were subjected to the far-reaching standardization of spelling, thus they are not a reliable source for a linguistic research. The Beginning of Lithuanian Dialectology: Identification of Dialects, Research Perspectives and Their Types], Vilnius: Mokslo ir enciklopedijų leidybos centras, 2018, 319 pp.The reviewed monograph is the first part of the three-volume series prepared by the Lithuanian linguist Danguolė Mikulėnienė. She has taken on the ambitious task of presenting the genesis, development stages, paradigmatic breakthroughs and achievements of Lithuanian dialectology until the beginning of the twenty-first century. The richly illustrated study contains a detailed discussion of the period preceding the birth of scientific dialectology in Lithuania (from the seventeenth until the mid-nineteenth centuries), and covers in a systematic way conceptual changes in the linguists’ approaches to the issue of determining the extent and classification of Lithuanian dialects at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The advantage of the monograph is the consistent combining of a historiographic approach with a strictly linguistic analysis. The reviewed volume includes commentaries on numerous source materials which document contribution that scientists from various research traditions have made to the discourse of Lithuanian scientific dialectology paving the way for its constant development. Philology and identity. The Polish-Lithuanian dialogue on father Antoni Juszkiewicz (Antanas Juška), as author of translational dictionariesThe nineteenth-century lexicographical legacy of Fr. Antoni Juszkiewicz (Antanas Juška) is a common linguistic and cultural heritage of Poles and Lithuanians. The translational dictionaries, made by the bilingual author, document the spoken Lithuanian language (in dialectal and colloquial versions) and, as well, Polish regional language in the contemporary territory of Lithuania in the period of partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The dictionaries are treated as important sources that provide ethnolinguistic information on two phenomena:conceptualization of the world by the two nations at the time of crystallization of the Lithuanian identity, personal vision of the world presented by the lexicographer, the priest, remaining in the situation of a cultural Polish-Lithuanian bivalence. In the mid-19th century the Antanas Juška’s idea of documenting the folk colloquial vocabulary was a new and significant phenomenon in Lithuanian lexicography. The dictionary of Lithuanian-Polish language was a matter of importance for the society. Lithuanians needed the dictionary even more than Poles did. At first the author of this dictionary dedicated his attention to the intellectuals. The brightest minds of that time were going to Polish schools, so the Polish and Lithuanian languages were always used side by side.As a lexicographer, Antanas Juška understood that not only folk colloquial language but also ethnography was an important aspect of national cultural development. For a few decades he dedicated his inexhaustible energy to recording Lithuanian words, phrases, songs and customs of the country. He was attentive to the psychological, historical and traditional aspects of the culture as well as tried to describe the way people expressed their thoughts.Anatans Juška recorded more than 30,000 words of the spoken language. The ‘Lithuanian-Polish Dictionary’ in its different editions reflects the state of Lithuanian language in the second half of the 19th century. The words in this dictionary include loanwords, vulgarities and sentences that reflect the difficult human conditions of that time.‘The Lithuanian-Polish Dictionary’ by Antanas Juška is an important source of lexicography. The remaining manuscript and editorial processes reflect many difficulties leading to the final results. It is an important and valuable source for researching the development of Lithuanian literary writing. Filologia a tożsamość. Dwugłos polsko‑litewski o ks. Antonim Juszkiewiczu, twórcy słowników przekładowychXIX-wieczna spuścizna leksykograficzna ks. Antoniego Juszkiewicza (lit. Antanas Juška) stanowi wspólne dziedzictwo językowo-kulturowe Polaków i Litwinów. Idea Antoniego Juszkiewicza, by gromadzić słownictwo ludowe i potoczne, była nowym, znaczącym fenomenem w litewskiej leksykografii połowy XIX w. Słownik litewsko-polski to swoiste novum dla ówczesnego społeczeństwa. Litwini potrzebowali takiego słownika bardziej niż Polacy. W pierwszym rzędzie, autor adresował ten słownik do inteligencji.
The Lithuanian and Polish linguistic legacy of Antanas Juška from a twenty-first-century perspectiveThis article presents the assumptions of new research on the legacy of Antanas Juška, recorded in Lithuanian and Polish. We assume that the forgotten works of this bilingual author from Lithuania, mainly translation dictionaries, are an underestimated study material for interdisciplinary research. They are particularly important for understanding the rich conceptualisations of the world by two collective subjects, Poles and Lithuanians, co-existing in Lithuania under the Russian partition. We have formulated two research hypotheses: (1) the bilingual dictionaries authored by Antanas Juška, who was a Catholic priest, are not only a valuable source of knowledge about the state of the Polish and Lithuanian languages in the nineteenth century, but above all specific cultural texts which form part of the social discourse of their time and place, and thus carry relevant ethnolinguistic and ethnocultural information; (2) bilingual dictionaries as a genre had an impact on the crystallisation of Lithuanian national awareness and the strengthening of cultural identity of Lithuanians in the second half of the nineteenth century.Juška’s linguistic legacy will be jointly studied by Polish and Lithuanian researchers from different perspectives, applying the tools and methods available in twenty-first-century humanities.I. In the ethnolinguistic and ethnohistorical paradigm: in view of the hypothesis that bilingual dictionaries constitute a narrative about the world and its historical time, we extract linguistic data that will enable us to capture the lexical and conceptual symmetry and asymmetry between the linguistic woldview of Poles and Lithuanians in the context of the crystallisation of Lithuanian national awareness.II. In the comparative perspective: (1) we will present Juška’s lexicographic legacy against the background of the Lithuanian and Polish lexicographic tradition; we will confront the lexicographic practice and the macro- and microstructure of his dictionaries with important works of Lithuanian lexicography and contemporary dictionaries recording colloquial, dialectal and regional vocabulary of various sub-regions of Lithuania; (2) we will compare the Polish material recorded in Juška’s translation dictionaries with dictionaries of the general, dialectal and regional Polish language from Lithuania; (3) we will answer the question whether the introduction of Russian translations into the Lithuanian-Polish dictionary published by the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg was merely a political requirement stemming from the political situation and censorship, or whether these translations complement the meanings of the Polish and Lithuanian entries.III. In the sociolinguistic and communication aspect: language contact and multilingualism, and the attendant processes of borrowing, mixing and “combining” vocabulary among users of the regional Polish language and spoken Lithuanian. Our research draws the attention of linguists to old, underestimated texts. It also indicates the cognitive value of linguistic analysis open to history, ethnology and identity studies. By studying Juška’s linguistic legacy in the context of modern scholarship, we introduce it into the sphere of collective life of Lithuanians and Poles. In this way, we create a plane for a better mutual understanding which will foster the overcoming of negative national stereotypes. Litewska i polska spuścizna językowa Antoniego Juszkiewicza (Antanasa Juški) z perspektywy XXI wiekuW artykule przedstawiamy założenia nowych badań spuścizny Antoniego Juszkiewicza (Juški) zapisanej w języku litewskim i polskim. W aspekcie socjolingwistycznym i komunikacyjnym: w kontekście kontaktów językowych i zachodzących w sytuacji wielojęzyczności procesów zapożyczania, mieszania i „uwspólniania” słownictwa między użytkownikami polszczyzny regionalnej i mówionego języka litewskiego. Włączając spuściznę lingwistyczną A. Juszkiewicza w obszar współczesnej nauki, wprowadzamy ją zarazem w sferę życia zbiorowego Litwinów i Polaków. Stwarzamy tym samym płaszczyznę do lepszego zrozumienia siebie nawzajem i przewartościowania negatywnych stereotypów narodowych.
The article initiates historical, linguistic, and textological research into the rich diaristic legacy of Emilia Wróblewska, née Beniowska (1830–1886), a Polish woman from the circle of Vilnius intelligentsia, who had written intimate diaries for herself and her children for almost 30 years. The subject of exploratory study are the texts of the diaries kept by Wróblewska for her son Tadeusz in the years 1859–1886, and her daughter Maria in the years 1865–1873 (with an entry for Emilia’s younger son, Augustyn, added in 1886). The paper aims at identifying the most prominent features of spelling and linguistic phenomena (regarding phonetics, inflection, syntax, vocabulary, and lexis) that can be qualified as regional features typical of the North-Eastern Borderlands (Kresy) in the diarist’s Polish language. A comparative method was used in the study; the material extracted from the diaries was confronted with the usage and developmental tendencies of the standard Polish language of the 19th century.

W badaniu została zastosowana metoda porównawcza, wyekscerpowany z dzienników materiał poddano konfrontacji z uzusem i tendencjami rozwojowymi polskiego języka ogólnego XIX w.
