This text is a response to Grzegorz Pertek’s polemical essay Prepositions: The Metaphysics of “Closeness.” In this text, I offer a rebuttal to allegations against the metaphysical gravity of the postulate “closeness” by pointing out the category of “acuteness,” which “softens” this postulate and makes it “dynamic.” I also clarify that I am not concerned with inverting the relationship between hermeneutics and deconstruction, but in displacing them by asserting the fundamental kinship between the two discourses.

The article is an interpretation of the traditional figure of the hermeneutic circle made from the perspective of John D. Caputo’s radical hermeneutics. It begins with a recapitulation of the most important modern positions on the hermeneutic circle, which postmodern hermeneutics radicalizes, noting the impossibility of its closure or fulfillment. Movement in the postmodern hermeneutic circle takes place not between the parts and the whole, but only between the different parts. Thus, one might say that this circle is twisted, and this has a dual meaning. It evokes Jacques Derrida’s interpretation of a phrase from Hamlet, “time is out of joint”, but it also plays with the meaning of the twist, which can be understood as a Verwindung: the impossibility of the transgression beyond modern hermeneutics.
The article discusses the approach to the text and the process of interpretation which we encounter in postmodern (radical) hermeneutics. It begins with a discussion ofthe concept of the text developed by Hans-Georg Gadamer, which is then confronted with the critique applied to hermeneutics by Jacques Derrida. After the recapitulation of both positions, an unexpected similarity is observed between the Gadamerian and Derridean teachings on the theme of the “ontology” of the literary work and the “nature” of the process of interpretation. Postmodern hermeneutics, on the one hand, perceives this similarity, while, on the other, it attempts to treat the “lesson of deconstruction” seriously, turning more watchful attention to the text’s textuality, its trace aspect, the infinite play of meanings that renders impossible the conclusion, completion, unification or fulfilment of any hermeneutic procedures. Keeping close to the text based on postmodern hermeneutics thus involves a kind of “tracing the traces” – a pursuit of the meaning-generating play of the text and additional inscription in it of the reader’s creative counter-signature. At the end of the article, the metaphor of “painfulness” or arduousness is proposed as a concept that aptly conveys the relations of radical hermeneutics with the text.

The author of the article tries to describe the philosophy of Emil Cioran as a radical diagnosis of European nihilism. The first part of the article is about threads of theodicy in Cioran’s writing. It shows their timeliness as an announcement of nihilism. Subsequently author analyzes Cioran’s reception of the thought of Friedrich Nietzsche. It turns out that Cioran is one of the most original interpreters of Nietzsche, but also one of his most radical continuers. The existential philosophy of Cioran rejects any metaphysical comfort and face the tragedy of human being. The last two paragraphs of the article are an attempt of a comparative interpretation of Cioran’s and Gianni Vattimo’s philosophy of nihilism. They reveal a similarity between both of philosophers who think of nihilism as a chance to recover from the illness called humanism, anthropocentrism or metaphysics.
The starting point for consideration is to put the Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophy into question whether the status of “absolute Otherness” may also belong to the Other other than man. On the basis of the thought of Levinas it receives a negative responseand it is because of his involvement in the so-called anthropological machine (which he shares with Martin Heidegger and some other critics of metaphysics). But it is, however, possible to open the (broadly defined) phenomenological ethical thought drew on the achievements of Levinas to the question of the animal. This attempt might be centered around the proposals of Jacques Derrida, the author of the essay The Animal That Therefore I Am (More To Follow), where he spoke about the singularity of each animal, the problematic status of border between man and animal, and the being-with animals as a full-fledged modality of being. This is a provocative thought which asks us about our attitude to such issues as “responsibility” and “responsiveness”, “carno-phallogocentrism”, or the status of non-human animals. Derrida’s thought is here very close to some kind of phenomenological language, but it is rather the phenomenology of the otherness than the phenomenology of intentional subject. The same phenomenology that we find in Bernhard Waldenfels’s or John D. Caputo’s writing.
The first part of the paper offers a theoretical consideration of the Anthropocene as an epoch in which human and geological times have radically mixed. It outlines insights formulated within the Anthropocene discourse, as well as findings of climatology. They encourage developing the Anthropocene’s hauntology as an epoch in which “the time is out of joint”. The second part of the paper applies theory to literary studies practice (especially in terms of ecocriticism). Author reconstructs proposals to practice ecocriticism in the times of the Anthropocene formulated by Timothy Clark and Lynn Keller, and undertakes initial attempts at translating them into the Polish context.

Patryk Szaj attempts to inscribe Szczepan Kopyt’s Wersy o koniecznym oporze [Verses about the Necessary Resistance] into the theoretical framework of the Capitalocene. The starting point is the reconstruction of the condition of criticism in the Anthropocene. He opposes the beliefs expressed by some representatives of the Anthropocene discourse that criticism is ineffective in the face of the planetary challenges of this epoch. He argues that we criticism is till needed, as is also emphasized by the concept of the Capitalocene as an alternative to the Anthropocene. Next, Szaj moves on to a dialogue with Kopyt’s work. Using both the findings of critical theory and (new)materialistic concepts, Szaj points to Kopyt’s debt to both these traditions. He shows that Kopyt has managed to avoid the “speaking out of nowhere” that is associated with criticism. Kopyt speaks “from the world,” and his voice is that of a participant. This perspective, reconstructed in the article on the basis of Kopyt’s Wersy o koniecznym oporze, allows the poet to diagnose the anachronism of some Marxist heterodox practices (autonomism), as well as to note and creatively develop the positive and negative entanglements of human and inhuman actors in the era of Capitalocene.

Następnie autor przechodzi do dialogu z twórczością Kopyta.

The author of the article asks whether it is possible to practice post-anthropocentric hermeneutics. He expresses the need for opening the hermeneutic thought to the problem of what is non-human, especially in the context of contemporary diagnoses of the Anthropocene, climate crisis, ecological crisis, etc. Such a postanthropocentric correction of hermeneutics is possible due to the notion of “understanding” which can be extended towards understanding of non-human others and towards understanding with non-human others. This coincides with insights which have been formulated within animal studies, ecocriticism, posthumanism, etc. In order to make such an extension happen, however, a biopolitical correction of hermeneutics is also required, which would restore the hermeneutic subject to the biological and material life.
Anxieties. Tadeusz Różewicz and the So‑called Livestock Collating Tadeusz Różewicz’s poetry with Jacques Derrida’s critique of logocentrism and John D. Caputo’s so‑called poetics of obligation, this article ponders upon the ethical relation to non‑human animals – particularly livestock – in the aforementioned literary project. Although Różewicz’s volumes published early after the end of the war seem to drift towards negative anthropology, they tend to benefit from more modern interpretative codes, for instance Giorgio Agamben’s anthropological machine or Caputo’s poetics of obligation. With regard to the means of the latter one, it is argued that Różewicz’s poetry endeavours to rethink animal as the absolute Other, contributing to the ethical relation which has been previously restricted entirely to Human‑Other. Such poems as Walentynki, Świniobicie, Ucieczka świnek dwóch (z obozu zagłady – rzeźni), Buty i wiersze or Unde malum? confirm Różewicz’s sensitivity to animal suffering. Moreover, they often anticipate the ethical and philosophical debates upon the human/animal dyad, and their practical political and economic implications. Key words: logocentrism, poetics of obligation, anthropological machine, non‑human animals, Tadeusz Różewicz, Jacques Derrida, John D. Caputo
The article joins the discussion between the Anthropocene and the Capitalocene. It begins with a reconstruction of the objections to the first one made by, among others, Jason W. Moore, Eileen Crist or Donna Haraway (incorrect diagnosis of the causes of the ecological and climate crisis, ignoring the unequal responsibility for this crisis, maintaining the anthropocentric vision of the world). Subsequently, the author presents counterarguments of the supporters of the Anthropocene, including Ian Angus, Clive Hamilton, and Dipesh Chakrabarty (the Anthropocene does not ignore the economic and political context, supporters of the Capitalocene make an unjustified transfer of geological diagnoses to the field of sociology, the narrative about capitalism is not a broad enough framework to study climate change). The end of the article attempts to fuse the horizons of both concepts. The author sees them as two versions of climate hermeneutics, attempting to understand what is happening to our world and to work out an answer to this process.

Artykuł włącza się w dyskusję pomiędzy koncepcjami antropocenu i kapitałocenu. Rozpoczyna go rekonstrukcja zarzutów, jakie pierwszej z nich stawiają m.in. Jason W. Moore, Eileen Crist czy Donna Haraway (niewłaściwa diagnoza przyczyn kryzysu ekologiczno-klimatycznego, ignorowanie nierównej odpowiedzialności za ów kryzys, utrzymywanie antropocentrycznej wizji świata). Następnie autor przedstawia kontrargumenty zwolenników antropocenu, m.in.

Demokracja, kapitalizm i nieposłuszeństwo ekologiczne w Polsce”, red. Przemysław Czapliński, Joanna B. Bednarek, Dawid Gostyński, Książka i Prasa, Warszawa 2019, ss. 365]
The article presents preliminary remarks on the languages of the Anthropocene. Its assumption is that the Anthropocene requires a multidimensional, heterogeneous, cross-scale view revealing that how we name and describe the geological epoch matters to our thinking about the causes, consequences and actors responsible for the ecological and climate crisis. The author then describes a few exemplary languages of the Anthropocene: the language of geology, various theoretical discourses, as well as literature and art. The penultimate part of the article presents the content of the 11th volume of the journal “AUPC. Studia Poetica”. In the final part, the author proposes the “diffractive Anthropocene” category, which, in his opinion, makes it possible to face the Anthropocene as a new, non-intuitive, emergent event.

This article concerns fragmentary writing of Emil Cioran. The author tries to show that the fragment is a specific type of artistic creativity that is situated between literature and philosophy. The initial part of the article deals with the problem of modern fragmentarism that was born in the times of German romanticism. Then, the author investigates the causes of Cioran’s fragmentary writing, which are: the opposition to systematic philosophy, the opposition to modern idea of a literary „work” and the intellectual honesty which shows heterogeneity of life. All this makes the fragment very difficult to interpret: we wish to adopt the whole sense of it, but we cannot do this. Also, the title issue turns out to be unsolvable. Cioran escapes fixed categories. And fragment, as an unsuccessful, fractured discourse, can be both literature and philosophy, or none of them. That makes it similar to Jacques Derrida’s ideas of farmakon, aporia or différance.
