Growth in the acreage under GM plants is characterised by a particularly high rate. However, some countries - Poland included, are trying to prevent the cultivation of GM varieties. The European Union has introduced special legal and institutional safety mechanisms designed to prevent the possible harmful effects of genetically modified organisms and to protect the intellectual property rights. Various reservations are voiced concerning GM varieties. Firstly, it is stressed that they may pose a threat to the natural environment, bio-diversity and health of consumers. However, none of these opinions have been proven true. On the other hand, the cultivation of GM varieties has brought direct economic benefits to farmers and has reduced the negative effects of plant cultivation for the environment. It is expected that thanks to the presence of GM varieties the hopes may materialize for agriculture becoming less burdensome for the environment and for agriculture's ability to take up new tasks such as the provision of new raw materials and products.
