In the context of the contemporary world changes, the issue of social responsibility including the social responsibility of higher education institution deserves special attention. The category of responsibility in the social context underlines the importance of interest in social life subjects resulting from the process of maturation of the awareness of the society needs. In the public spirit issues found in the functioning of higher education institution, a special attention is drawn to the activity of academic circles based on a set of values, norms of behaviour and the practice to aspire to the truth, as the constitutive values for science, researchers and scientists is above all the truth, the search for it, its description and its discovery. In this context an important task for the higher education institutions becomes the maintenance of good relation with the socio-economic environment, as well as creating permanent and proper relationship with both internal and external subjects. The perception of higher education institutions as underlined by A. Sulejewicz in three dimensions: market, stratification and cognitive-educational ones contributes to the multiplication of common social welfare, and reinforces mature democracy and creates a civic society. Nonetheless, the scope of responsibility lies on both the society and the institution itself.

By referring to the metaphor of the theater – the theater of the reality of parametrization in which we the people of science participate – the author is wondering whether the servitude towards science can be identified with scientometrics, i.e., parametrization in the form that is known to us, where at least two of the indicators are subjective, namely: the type of the criteria and their weight. In the article, the emphasis is placed on the theatrical space of construction of the relation of “co-presence” which is not free from our need for recognition, individuality, uniqueness and being the best, at the top of the ranking of parametrization, “skillfully” playing our role of the “scientist” on the stage, which connects but also divides because of that, i.e. the place occupied on that stage. The acts are the spaces of our scientific activity, which – by capturing the “difference” in relation to others and the “difference” in relation to ourselves in time – allow us to be, to crystallize our image, to further define ourselves and to be recognizable in the role of a scientist in a reality that was not chosen by us, but is implemented according to codified rules of the game.

The narrative used in the article refers to the interpretational complexity of the phenomenon of contemporary society. Globalization fulfills a wide spectrum of the global world phenomena in the situation of unobviousness, diversity, ambivalence and ambiguity, which influence the new quality of sociocultural life. Trying to understand the content given to the distinguished definitions of society, intellectuals refer to the theory of the social development and to the interpretation of the mechanisms of a social change, with a focus on the spheres of social life, which are the impulses for changes taking place in the society. Emphasizing heterogeneity and changeability of forms of postmodern social organization, one may point to the following orientations capturing subtleness of the contemporary society: orientation to a global change, orientation to a certain type of civilization ascription to risk, orientation to responsibility, orientation to anticipation, orientation to responsible participation and cooperation in a changing and interdependent global society, orientation to knowledge, orientation to experience borrowed from the media, orientation to the consumption ideology. Society faces the task of selfdetermination in the situation of non-obviousness, risk, fragmentation and ambiguity. By no accident then, were the the globalizational processes in the world and a critical and permanent thought and evaluation of the changes taking place in the modern global society, in the focus of the authoress. Paying attention to the quality of the global “cultural ecumene” (U. Hannerz) inclines reflection about global changes in lifestyles which is meaningful for the quality of changes in the job world and career planning and career management practices. The sequential development of an individual (which is integrally linked with the career development) constitutes the essence of the process, which is lifelong. The economy which is based on knowledge determines the orientation on knowledge of the contemporary society. The development of careers of members in such a society is its crucial element. Moreover, the quality of socio-cultural and economic changes will demand constant career management and modification of its individualized paths.

The narration of this article is focused on showing various ways of capturing the phenomenon of career from a subjective perspective. The subject of an analysis will be the reconstruction of chosen theoretical perspectives, where one emphasizes changes in quality attitude to the career phenomenon and showing the “career making” meaning of people’s activities. The content presented in this article is concentrated on a subjective, personal aspect of capturing a career. In this sense, career is always ascribed to a specific individual, it is their assets and this particular individual attaches importance to the career phenomenon. In this sense, career is the sequence of experiences of a particular individual, linked with the quality of a professional life; this is a unique structure, resulting from autonomous choices.

The orientation of a contemporary society towards a global career creates the need of rebuilding the frames of human activity and innovation. The most important is active participation and cooperation in a reality undergoing a permanent change. Conceptualization of quality new apprehension of career issues as an individual’s possession indicates a many-sided character of a contemporary discourse, which combines implications of an interdisciplinary dialogue and creates the need to review theoretical reflection about the way of understanding career and conditions, as well as indicators of its formation and construction. The „prodevelopmental orientation” is a remedy for a contemporary human being to be oneself again in this situation in the world of careers. In this attitude towards the definition of „a career”, one underlines importance of constructing (not choosing) a career for designing a quality of life.

The article offers various systematisations of career theories. In the most general spectrum of classification, two criteria can be found: the content of the theory: content theories; process theories; content-and-process theories, and the constitutive factors of career: prescriptive theories; lifecycle theories. The highlighted classifications of career theories integrate and synthesise accounts, whose structural contents indicate a variety of different sources and cognitive perspectives, constituting a review of the thought regarding the career development process in a particular historical context, as a time period in which they have been established. Various contexts of apprehending the career issue lead to changes in its “theorising”.

Contemporary world has become a global ecumene. The theory of globalization as approached by R. Robertson invokes the world conceptualization which assumes reducing the tension between the dichotomous tendencies. Unification and diversification are complementary processes, they are mutually influential and essential for the contemporary stage of development of the global society. The paradigm of globalization on the social and cultural plane is revealed in the binary scheme of extremes, such as: decontextualization and recontextualization, decomposition and recomposition, deteritorialization and re-teritorialization, transculturation and internalization. The contemporary anti-globalist movement is a reflection of ideological opposition. The criticism of globalization remains in close connection to an increasingly lively discussion regarding alternatives to globalization. Specificity of the quality of global cultural ecumene reveals the need to shape and improve the orientation towards responsible participation and cooperation in the changing and co-dependent global society.

In the article, the author refers to the individualism-collectivism dichotomy, which is a theoretical construct serving to explain the mutual relations of the individual and the group. It moreover provides a dimension differentiating between cultures which give the primacy to the individual over the group and those, which privilege the group over the individual. An individualistic tendency means that an individual is the subject for whom the collective is an object of action. Collectivism is the polar opposite view: the collective entity is the proper subject of the proceedings, in relation to which individuals are objects. The author of the article, acknowledging the need to recognize the quality of images and views of academic youth about a career path, invoked the structure and function of selected normative assumptions as important dimensions of the socio-cultural mentality of the individual. The research study helped grasp the ‘individualistic’ and ‘collectivist’ normative assumptions of university youth, , emerging in the course of socialization and originating in the generalization of social experience.

The tradition positioning the study of careers in the structural-functional orientation sees the career as an external system, an objective phenomenon. In this cognitive perspective, a career means a sequence of professional roles fulfilled by the subject, which could mean promotion, stability or degradation. If we adopt an objective criterion to distinguish careers, it would be the positions (professional position or position within the profession) occupied in formal structures. In this sense, a career is not the attribute of an individual, but is the property of the professional role.

The subjective dimension of career development involves and connects career planning with private models of human life, professional aspirations and with the way they perceive their experiences. It should be noted here that Theory of Work Adjustment (R.V. Dawis) is the theoretical orientation, which attempts to explain satisfaction with career development by reference to the dynamics of the relationship between the subject and the environment. , is the theory of employability. The theory is rooted in the tradition of individual differences in the professional behaviour. This perspective links the career choice and development, seen as a permanent process, with the cycles of work adaptation, the source of which lies in the feeling of dissatisfaction. Unmet need of satisfaction is seen as a state of insatiability. Individuals aim at meeting this need through adaptation, which means seeking professional organizations and communities to meet their expectations (in the context of quality of meeting needs). The result of the search for determinants of job satisfaction is to draw attention to the following relationship, namely: commitment to a career increases the level of satisfaction resulting from career development.

The article takes up discourse on the development of the career theory that demands taking into account multicontextual changes in the world of work that pose new challenges for women. The subjective shading of the career phenomenon that treats career as an individual’s "property" was clearly stressed. When analysing individual paths of career development for both women and men it is necessary to take its wide scope of conditions into account, as well as inquire into semantic meanings assigned to the reality by the subject in order to interpret and understand past and new experiences. The focus on professional behaviours among women led to considerations on the change of the career concept in its general sense and meaning. Literature on the subject consistently underlines that career patterns will be less and less of a linear character, and more frequently of a sequential and cyclical one. The increase in the role assigned to career forces one to approach it within the category of professional identity development, planning and management skills, and the ability of monitoring one’s career in a lifelong perspective.
PL
Multicontextual social changes imply definitely new ways of interpretation and determine reflections about the condition of contemporary humans, including the human being as “a manager” of his own career. A society has become an area where individuals can show their initiative. A contemporary study of careers demands the inclusion of multicontextual changes in the job world. These changes face employees with new requirements. The most important ones are the increase of the role attached to a career and the ability to plan, manage and monitor one’s own career in a lifelong perspective. Considerations about a career cannot leave out the issue of the subjective sense that an individual finds in one’s own career in the context of possibilities that a man can have a satisfactory career. The world of careers is a world of numerous micro-changes. In the “portfolio” of micro-changes, the time between changes is reduced and after a period of stability renewed separation comes increasingly quickly.

The contemporary study of careers requires taking into consideration multicontextual changes in the world of work, which make individuals face new challenges. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the numerous transformations taking place in the contemporary reality, including in the world of work, which influence people’s professional career, the significance attributed to it and the success achieved through it. This article presents the results of own research concerning career success as perceived from the perspective of academic students from Poland. Particular attention was paid to two aspects of this issue: its objective and subjective nature, as well as the assessment of own chances for achieving it within one’s career path. The results of the studies prove, that the surveyed youth perceives success in a career in a subjective manner, but that its objective dimension is also important for the academic students, and that the vast majority take a positive attitude towards their own professional future. The resulting empirical material may carry important implications for the educational practice.

Giddens constructed the sociological theory using the legacy of sociological thought. Since the mid 1970’s this sociologist has elaborated his very concept of the “duality of structure” which sounded very illuminating. Multiplicity of theoretical orientations, which had been the subject of an analytical processing, became the departure point for drawing up a new theoretical system. The cognitive value of the concept system proposed by A. Giddens is significant. The originality of Gidden’s decisionsand the theoretical identity in the assumptions that specify the structure, in a way emphasized by the creator of the structuration theory, certainly directs critics’ interest to the agreements concerning the acting subject. Quite often, they make their position more precise after following through the continuity and changes of A. Giddens’ thoughts presented in his later works.

The article emphasises that an essential factor is the cognitive status of a theory which would help understand the dynamics of historical acceleration and related changes in the world of careers. Career development can be discussed in various analytical and interpretive theoretical frameworks underpinned by different conceptual tenets. In this context, the major challenge is to generate new approaches which would go beyond the boundaries defined by partial paradigms and contribute to formulating a clear career theory, providing a common point of reference for the community of career researchers. Mark Savickas’s career construction theory is analysed as a candidate for an epistemological approach to explain a wide range of processes involved in “organising a diversity” of career patterns within contemporary globalised society. Savickas’s approach, reflecting the constructivist view on career development, is cognitively interesting because it considers vocational behaviours and their development in a processual way, including their holistic organisation.

Materiały i metody. W tekście przedstawiono wyniki dwóch badań przeprowadzonych wśród młodzieży. Próba składała się ze studentów uczelni wyższych (N=354) oraz osób uczących się w szkołach zawodowych (N=697). Rozpoznano związek pomiędzy proaktywnością (mierzoną skalą zachowań proaktywnych w karierze autorstwa Augustyna Bańki) a cechami jednostek, stosując określone procedury analizy statystycznej (współczynnik korelacji rangowej Spearmana, współczynnik V-Cramera, test chi-kwadrat, test t-Studenta, jednoczynnikowa analiza wariancji ANOVA). Wyniki. Zgromadzony materiał empiryczny wskazuje na istotne statystycznie powiązania między cechami jednostkowymi a czynnikami społeczno-kulturowymi i kontekstowymi, które kształtują zachowania zawodowe młodzieży. Stwierdzono między innymi zależność pomiędzy proaktywnością a płcią, osiągnięciami edukacyjnymi, samooceną, poczuciem skuteczności, jakością relacji interpersonalnych, stylem tożsamości i oceną szans na odniesienie sukcesu w karierze oraz wykazano, iż u badanej młodzieży przeważa postrzeganie sukcesu zawodowego w kategoriach subiektywnych. Wnioski. Zachowania proaktywne zwiększają szanse podmiotu na odniesienie sukcesu w karierze zawodowej, zaś rozpoznanie czynników, które je determinują staje się kluczowe w konteście przygotowywania młodzieży do wejścia na rynek pracy.

Introduction. Adopting a proactive approach to one’s career is now becoming a necessary condition for the effective planning, monitoring, and managing of one’s own professional future, and thus increasing the chances of success in the flexible labour market. These issues become especially cognitively interesting in the case of young people who are about to actively participate in their space. Aim. The aim of the article is to answer the question: how do young people who are in the education system, and are preparing to enter the labour market, perceive their chances of success in their career and what factors determine it? Materials and methods. The text presents the results of two studies conducted among adolescents. The sample consisted of university students (N=354) and people studying in vocational schools (N=697). The relationship between proactivity (as measured by the scale of proactive behaviour in a career by Augustyn Bańka) and the characteristics of individuals was diagnosed using specific statistical analysis procedures (Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, V-Cramer coefficient, chi-square test, Student’s t-test, one-way ANOVA). Results. The collected empirical material indicates statistically significant relationships between individual features and socio-cultural and contextual factors that shape the professional behaviour of young people. Among other things, a correlation was found between proactivity and gender, educational achievement, self-esteem, sense of effectiveness, quality of interpersonal relations, identity style, and the assessment of the chances of success in a career, and it was shown that the perception of professional success in subjective terms prevails in the examined young people. Conclusion. Proactive behaviour increases the entity’s chances of success in a professional career, and recognizing the factors that determine it becomes crucial in the context of preparing young people to enter the labour market.
