The functioning of the enterprise in a constantly changing environment means that they should make the necessary transformation, meet challenges, thus anticipate and shape the reality. Each company should be the instigator of continuous change, particularly innovative projects which success depends largely on the mobilization of all employees, on creative thinking, action and learning. Strużyński M. writes: “the contemporary processes of globalization create new conditions for flexible and rapid action on the use of various forms of organized business to gain competitive advantage on specific markets” (Strużyński 2003). Globalization can promote and restrict entrepreneurship, especially the individual one. It is written more often, however, that globalization offers the most professional conditions for the great inspiration in the field of entrepreneurship, and it is the source of modern technology and efficient management methods.
Today, a company is considered as innovative and competitive, when it possesses the ability to use intellectual capital and information system in order to understand the market and results of scientific research, new concepts, ideas and inventions which are expected by consumers due to the high level of modernity. Therefore, more and more enterprises become a part of a network organization which implements the processes of innovation - because they are jointly capable of generating a higher value than when they acted alone. Thus, innovation can be the main source of building specific and unique skills of the company, and their scale depends largely on the amount of resources spent on R&D activities funded by both the state and by the company itself.

In order, therefore, to achieve a competitive advantage, it is necessary to maintain the high level of innovation, which should result in the implementation of new solutions, ideas and concepts that contribute to the competitiveness on a global scale.
Celem artykułu jest ocena poziomu poczucia bezpieczeństwa osób pracujących w sektorze MŚP. Opisane badania obejmowały identyfikację źródeł zagrożenia, ocenę ich wielkości oraz ocenę poczucia zabezpieczenia przed skutkami materializacji tych, że zagrożeń. Badania przeprowadzono na reprezentatywnej próbie przedsiębiorców pracujących w małych i średnich organizacjach gospodarczych na terenie Polski. W celu syntetycznej prezentacji wyników zaproponowano definicję współczynnika dyskomfortu. Wykazano że wielkość tego współczynnika w okresie badanym zdecydowanie maleje. Wynik ten zinterpretowano jako jedno ze źródeł będących przyczyną wzrostu wydajności pracy.

The aim of this article is to assess the level of security enjoyed by business owners operating in the SME sector. The present research identifies the sources and extent of risk, while also gauging the sense of security against the effects of this risk. The research was conducted on a representative sample of entrepreneurs operating small and medium-sized business organizations in Poland. In order to present the results synthetically, a definition of discomfort coefficient was formulated. It has been shown that the value of that coefficient decreased strongly during the considered period. This result was interpreted as one of the causes of the increase in work efficiency.
