For a literary scholar specialising in texts targeted at children it is tempting to explore the authentic, original childish cognition of the text, together with the feelings and reflections that accompany the child while reading. At the same time, the scholar knows that the access to these sphere is, inevitably, only partial, even scant compared to the scholar’s curiosity. This article is an attempt to describe a specific “case study” for the analysed source of cognition are the memories of the author herself, concerning her childish readings, her judgements and emotions that the characters she read about evoked in her. The motif for such an idea is a strong conviction that the information included in her vivid memories and experiences provide an interesting, sometimes even surprising, field for analysis,. Nevertheless, the author is aware that the memories we possess are never available in the “clear form”. However, the process of transformation of the memories is not treated as an obstacle; quite the contrary, it offers a possibility to add an additional perspective, since the adult personality of a former child – a bookworm – is interlinked with the profession of a literary scholar.

The Holy Virgin in Polish tradition became an archetype of mother suffering. Lament świętokrzyski, that presents the lyrical monologue of Holy Virgin, is a masterpiece of Polish medieval passion song. Because of its artistic and human value, Lament has its continuations in contemporary poetry. The analysis of two poems (by Joanna Kulmowa and Ewa Szelburg- Zarembina) exposes similarity and differences between them and their prototype.

The article constitutes the analysis of multiple presence of angelic topic in Adriana Szymańska’s poetry. The poetess applies liftiness; the angels presence is connected with sublimity. There is presence with literary and intertextual property (Rilkes’ angels). Moreover, one of the most important aspects of her creation is openess for religious side of reality. There is the reason, why angels appears in her poems so often. Sometimes they are being treated as real, supernatural beings. On the other hand, they could have been only a kind of poctic methaphor.

That’s special in Polish sociology of literature, that so many priests take part in modem Polish literary life. Scientific men arc interest in “ the priests poetry”, but some of them think, that only a part of these poems are special. I think, that one of the most interesting poets is Jerzy Szymik. He creates religious art. In my essay I tried to show, how personal his poems are. In his books people can see all the sides of existencia! roles of the humans. Jerzy Szymik and his soul means: “ family man”, priest, human from Śląsk, European, “human of the books” and “human of the words”. The last aspect has realised in two ways - religious and as a poet. All these aspects join each other. Together - there are the truthes about human life. The most important element for Szymik is belief in miracle - Goddes soul in human body.

In Poland Jerzy Szymik is a precursor of a scientific research on literature analysed from a theological perspective and treated as a locus theologicus. Literature and books are topics explored extremely often in the works of Jerzy Szymik, both in his essays, religious articles and poetry. The purpose of this paper is to present the most vital aspects of the topics. Presence of the art of reading as well as joy of reading as a poetic theme seems to be of a particular interest.

Artykuł jest propozycją odczytania wiersza Wisławy Szymborskiej „Uprzejmość niewidomych”, z zakwestionowaniem jego pozornej oczywistości. Wskazanie na aspekty, które w tym wierszu mogą budzić zdziwienie, prowadzi do sformułowania pytań szczegółowych, na które odpowiedź odnajdywana jest w kontekście całej twórczości lirycznej Szymborskiej. W tym ujęciu problematyka wiersza wykracza poza kwestie, obecne w nim w sposób dosłowny, takie jak moc słowa poetyckiego i relacja między poetą a publicznością. Odsłania się antropologiczny wymiar refleksji, dotyczący relacji pomiędzy ludzką świadomością a światem.

This paper is a proposal to study the poem Uprzejmość niewidomych by Wisława Szymborska in order to question its apparent non-obviousness. By pointing out aspects which may cause a person to wonder the reader is led to formulating specific questions. Answers to them may be found in the context of all lyrical works by Szymborska. Problems depicted in this poem transgress literal concerns such as the power of poetry and relationships between the poet and readers. The anthropological dimension of the reflections concerning the relations between human consciousness and the world is unveiled.

The article concentrates on motifs and ideas of biblical origin in the post-war literary output of Roman Brandstaetter, presented at different textual levels. The author of the paper considers motifs which are the most frequent and significant for writer’s artistic visage, like the prodigal son, the sacrifice of Isaac, the fight against the angel, the abyss, the imitation of God, the incarnation. The aim is to describe the transformations of the motifs and the ideas, to trace them to their biblical source, and to interpret their functions in the texts. Brandstaetter’s work is interpreted in the light of the Catholic theology, the Christian tradition (included mysticism) and the whole text of the Bible, both Old and New Testament.
