Services play an important role in the Polish economy alongside industry, construction, banking or agriculture. On the European Union markets services represent the dominant area of economic activity. This position is exemplified by the number of employees in that sector of the European Union economy providing jobs to about 75% of the total EU professionally active population. Results of the analysis of source materials concerning the level of competition in the postal market indicate its rapid development, including fierce competition in the sector of services allowed for every operator after obtaining the concession as well as completely deregulated postal services. In the reserved services market only the monopoly of the Polish Post Office continues in providing services of general nature.

The paper discusses the main features of Poland's two neighboring economies - Russia and Ukraine. It focuses on the presentation of basic macroeconomic indicators in the transformation period of 1990 s and in the first decade of the 21st century. The authors formulated the hypothesis that in an era of increasing globalization and integration of national economies the issue of strengthening ties between Russia and Ukraine and the cooperation of these two countries becomes increasingly pertinent and takes on a whole new meaning. Common interests, as well as mental and cultural proximity should become an underlying motif of key motto for Russia and Ukraine in the process of economic cooperation, which certainly can bring tangible benefits to both societies, and will strengthen the two countries in the international arena. The paper is based on the statistical data of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, the statistical offices of Russia and Ukraine, as well as National Bank of Ukraine.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIFFERENTIATION OF POLISH REGIONS

63%
EN
The publication's objective is presentation of the interregional differentiation among the Polish voivodeships. On the basis of the statistical measures applied - mainly, coefficient of variation and the median - the author attempts to present the regional differentiation of the Polish voivodeships and to evaluate which voivodeships manage to improve their competitive position and which ones face its deterioration. However, the changes in the statistical indicators are not sizeable, which on one hand attests to the durability of the said differences, while at the same time calls for cautious formulation of decisive opinions about the effectiveness of regional development policy. Simultaneously, the author points out that the period 2000 - 2004 has resulted in significant deterioration of the Polish regions; competitiveness vis-รก-vis many EU regions.
