The text is a practical attempt to identify and interpret three quoted fragments of prose/poetry dedicated to historical and geographic realities in Poland in the first half of the XX century. It may be an indication of the methods how to deal with a literary text so that this text could reveal its own roots in Polish historicity and Polish literary quality in order to become a tool of so-called episodic memory – allowing for the accumulation of words, expressions and information about a social, cultural and political climate of the beginning of the XX century.

Polish literature as material for teaching the Polish language and culture has a special status for one basic reason. Namely, it fulfils, to a significant degree, the role of the Polish national consciousness material, both in terms of locality, cultural idiomaticity or “the patriotism of small nations” which must be supported continuously by historical stories. However there is also a more rudimentary thing.

Teaching of Polish literature is presented in three perspectives. In a historical perspective, 20th century literature is displayed in opposition to Holocaust, a main issue of the century, to inform students that 20th century writing stands in the shadow of one of the greatest tragedies of mankind. In a literary perspective, 20th century writing is presented in comparison to issues of the avant-garde (and modernism in general) and in a cultural perspective, Polish literature is presented as a constant tension of ethnocentric (national) and eurocentric points of view.

The author of the text ponders to what degree the rendering of Lithuania in the works of Miłosz is a historical description, to what extent it is a myth- and legend-forming presentation of a happy land, a “little homeland” etc., and how much this description helps to relieve old Polish complexes, historical grudges and obsessions which tormented Miłosz mostly in the later period of his work.
