Due to the specificity of the territories of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, the memory of the January Uprising in the interwar period was one of the elements of so-called cultural “repolonization” of the Pomeranian area, aiming at restoration of social unity and unification of the Polish state. Essential in the context of shaping and honoring the remembrance of the 1863 events among the Pomeranian society were the actions taken by the state authorities, activity of educational units, mass media and other institutions (the Polish Army, societies, associations, and other organizations that functioned in the Pomeranian Voivodeship), veterans, as well as anniversary celebrations. The character of anniversaries of the January Uprising and their importance particularly shaped social awareness. They were simultaneously a testimony of the past and a form of social communication, which showed not only historical aspect of the events, but also their contemporary context.
