The article presents the results of a survey that the Department of Labour and Social Policy carried out in 2006 to assess problems with work-life balance as experienced by employees in the Lodz region. The article provides the employees’ general assessment of the quality of the work-life balance, as well as discussing the stressogenic factors in the workplace and occupational problems disturbing employees’ work-life balance. The article also presents the effect of various factors, such as employee’s age, sex, family situation, type of employment or firm’s profile on the worklife balance felt by employees in the Lodz region.

The article describes the special character of the work-life programmes functioning in German companies. Presentation of the instruments adopted by the German firms is preceded by an analysis of key factors determining work-life balance in Germany, mainly demographic changes and some elements of social policy. Most of the article’s space is devoted to discussing how German firms apply the work-life balance programmes to help their employees reconcile their work and family responsibilities. The article also highlights German achievements in assessing the costs and benefits involved in implementing the work-life balance instruments.

In the modern world, a socio-economic development is essentially based on knowledge. It is therefore believed that educational investments can accelerate the pace of economic growth and in the individual dimension help better prepare school-leavers to launch a satisfying career. The article discusses directions of the Polish vocational education reform and the concept of vocational lifelong learning. Surveys of school leavers' further careers were proposed to asses the effectiveness of the actions taken. The article characterizes the method and discusses the present state and directions in further development of the Polish vocational school system based on results provided by surveys conducted in Poland.

Die environments in which modern organizations operate are changing rapidly. The development of modern technologies, particularly information technologies, necessitates new forms of behaviour. It is believed that in the knowledge-based economy the competitive advantage belongs to those organizations that efficiently manage their intangible assets thus making their value go up. The gap between the market value and book value of an enterprise defined us firm’s value is filled bv intellectual capital. The latter is based on a well-developed human capital that produces other components of intellectual capital. The article presents the concept of intellectual capital formation in an organization, as well as those HRM aspects that can be especially important for raising firm’s value. Special attention is paid to aspects such as inclusion of human resources to the knowledge management process, use of the human resource leverage, building a motivation system that helps enhance firm’s value, as well as measurement of human capital.
