On the sacrament of penance and reconciliation we can lead discussion at various levels (theological, pedagogical, psychological, social). In the present article discusses the problem of preparation for the use of the sacrament of penance and reconciliation, which takes place in the framework of the “German catechesis”. The term is broad and includes preparation for the sacrament of penance in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg, which in German-speaking countries. The context of this statement is the deepening crisis of faith in a multicultural society, the crisis of the functioning of the Church (generally institutions and religious communities), the crisis of knowledge, understanding and use of the sacraments, as well as the crisis of the sacrament of the priesthood (of all kinds of scandals over “offi cialdom” routine and discouragement). Considerations are addressed to Polish readers, hence understanding of catechesis will be wide –as teaching and education of religious and moral, and therefore the impact, which takes place both in school (Religionsunterricht), and in the parish (Gemeindekatechese). The introduction to the discussion is to show how the sacrament of penance is functioning in German ministry.

Author defines catechetics as a subdiscipline of the pastoral theology, autonomous and interdisciplinary theological science. The definition of catechetics is conditional upon the comprehension of catechesis. The name of catechesis was given to the whole of the efforts within the Church to make disciples, to help people to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and to educate and instruct them in this life and thus build up the Church - the Body of Christ. Catechetics is a research on evangelization and catechesis in the Church. In this article author writes about subject, division, tasks, sources and methods of catechetics.

Pole badawcze przedstawionego artykułu obejmuje edukację religijną i estetyczną.

The research field of text is wide and includes questions related to both religious education and aesthetic education. A wide definition of religious painting gives the possibility to find numerous common points between school catechesis and art education. A research question taken up in this article is: What religious paintings are used in school textbooks for lower secondary school and how are they used? In school textbooks various religious paintings have been used. Three series of textbooks for the Catholic religion lessons referred to the reproductions of lesser-known paintings and sometimes even promoted completely unknown works. From time to time references to the paintings of lesser value and of little aesthetic significance also appeared. Still, they were exceptions and in general it can be stated that in textbooks for religious education the masterpieces of world and Polish painting, of recognized and indisputable aesthetic value, can be found. Religious paintings created the opportunity to visualize catechetical information, go deeper in reflection, and relate it to life. Paintings in the catechetical message are included in the widely formulated integral education understood as the development of different human abilities: intellectual, emotional, volitional, or acting. They teach how to discover beauty, be sensitive to its various manifestations, maintain and share it. In newer textbooks for the Catholic religion one can notice a positive trend to more frequent references to various works of art, including painting depictions. The use of the richness brought about by the whole heritage of art is connected to the opportunity to correlate the impacts of teachers of religion and art education. Mutual learning, referring, and deepening of those contents which are programmed for the two subjects can benefit in the form of greater knowledge, developed skills, and mature attitudes of students themselves.
This article in a synthetic way presents the complex issue of ecumenical education of religion, fluctuated between ‘catechesis’ and ‘religious studies’. Catechesis is a basic teaching of the Church about salvation and was understood as an integral and systematic process of upbringing in faith. The term „religious studies” was used as a form of the communication of knowledge about religion, as teaching about religion or religions with no stress on any of them, without trying to make any personal references, treating religion solely in a horizontal way, as a phenomenon related to human life. Pedagogy of religion done without a specific confession, specific denomination is a peculiar form of secularisation, regardless whether it is intended or not. Such pedagogy of religion becomes paradoxically a science located outside a confession, which serves its development as a pedagogical theory, not a specific practice of education. Religion is treated as a universal phenomenon having its share in obtaining a fullness of humanity. Contemporarily offered pedagogy of religion can not be identified with the Catholic pedagogy or a pedagogy of any Christian church.

From the point of view of religious upbringing the issue of confessionality is very significant. According to the General Directory for Catechesis: “The confessional character of religious instruction in schools, in its various focuses, given by the Church in different countries is an indispensable guarantee offered to families and students who choose such teaching”. At present few Germans are interested in the problem of confessional differences between Christians though many of them identify themselves with Christianity, its customs, or commandments. Religious upbringing is based on confessionality and specific reference to the community of believers, both in the personal (a testimony of the teacher of faith) and material sense (transmission of confessionally determined contents). It not so obvious for everyone. Some think that in the pluralistically oriented “school for everyone” confessional division cannot be present. Contemporarily, speaking about confessionality of those classes frequently faces the accusation of non-tolerance or returning to “Church indoctrination” on the ground of the public system of education. Superficially understood ecumenism frequently connected to religious ignorance, subjectivism, and relativism lead to the decline of the sense of confessional distinctiveness and indifference to crucial confessional dissimilarities. The article reminds us significant questions related to the dilemma of confessionality of the school teaching of religion in Germany and therefore understanding of the word “confessionality” and its historical, legal, and practical references. It is worth reminding that there is no general (non-confessional) Christianity and confessional upbringing is consistent with the rights entitled to both families and children.

Płytko rozumiany ekumenizm połączony często z religijną ignorancją, subiektywizmem i relatywizmem prowadzą do zaniku poczucia odrębności wyznaniowej, do zobojętnienia wobec istotnych różnic wyznaniowych.
Article is an attempt of synthetical view on major ideas presented in German documents of last quarter of the century. Since Conference for the Clergy issued General Directory for Catechesis I 1997, there has not been national Directory for Catechesis that would tackle specifics of religious education and set directions for modern catechesis. German bishops oſten commented on religious education and connected issues. Most valid views were presented in four documents: 1. Zeit zur Aussaat. Missionarisch Kirche sein (Sowing time. Being missionary church.) 2000 ; 2. Erwachsenentaufe als pastorale Chance. Impulse zur Gestaltung des Katechumenates (Adult baptism, as ministrative chance. Impulses for forming catechumen ) 2001 ; 3. Katechese in veränderter Zeit (Catechesis changing in time) 2004 ; 4. Der Religionsunterricht vor neuen Herausforderungen( Religious education lessons and new challanges)2005.Above mentioned documents can function as a quasi ‘ German Directory for catechesis’.

Long tradition of teaching religious education in schools paired with a desire to include it in the school system as well as in context of Church’s policy were among the reasons behind creation of Austrian Directory for Catechesis, issued before General Directory for Catechesis itself. First such document was written in 1971, next in 1982. Both documents express local Church’s concern for the right direction of catechesis in parishes, families and school education. Tis article presents and analyses two other important documents: Österreichisches Katechetisches Direktorium für Kinder- und Jugendarbeit (Austrian Directory for Catechesis) from 1981 r. and Verkündigung und neue Evangelisierung in der Welt von heute (Annunciation and new evangelisation in modern world) issued by Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Austria in 2012.
