The aim of this paper is to present the concept of the turbulent environment of organisations and its influence on employee competencies. The competency set of today’s professionals must adapt to turbulent times. These new environmental changes are exemplified mainly by the computerisation and intellectualisation of work. There are new types of organisational structures, omnipresent uncertainty and hyper-competition – these are what make innovation important. Most importantly, the approach to human capital has changed significantly during the last decade; it is no longer considered an expense, more an investment that will allow a company to profit in future. It is indisputable that the way work is done has changed significantly during the last 50 years, and resulted in changes in today’s model of an employee, who is described as knowledge workers.

Pracownicy wiedzy to powiększająca się grupa pracowników, która stanowi nową jakość, szczególnie cenną dla organizacji. Firmy nie do końca wiedzą jak nimi zarządzać, aby ich utrzymać, w pełni korzystać z potencjału i zapewniać dalszy rozwój satysfakcjonujący obie strony. W artykule zostało zdefiniowane pojęcie pracownika wiedzy, jego cechy charakterystyczne i wyróżniające. Autor podkreśla, że każda organizacja musi stawiać czoło wyzwaniom, jakie niesie z sobą pojawienie się tej nowej grupy pracowników.

The article presents the issue of human work in changing organizations. Recent turbulences in the global economy are revolutionary and never observed before. There is no doubt that phenomenon such as globalization, information technology at work and rising importance of knowledge have significantly influenced changes in professional work and higher expectation for employees. The aim of the article is to indicate basic characteristics of the evolution of human work, changes in the competency profile of a contemporary worker, and challenges for education. In the first part, the author focuses on the importance of work for human being, its evolution across the time, and its main characteristics. In the second part there were proposed five main characteristics of today new workers. In the last part, the author points to the need to make changes in educational system, as it is currently not able to meet job market requirements. Ending of the article has been devoted to the author’s conclusions.
