In the article I use the results of my field studies carried out in summer 2011 in the Astravyets District (Belarusian: Acтpabeц), specifically in the so-called “Gervyatsky Krai” (from the name of the town of Gervyats). Accompanying an expedition from the Belarusian State University, which studied traditional local cuisine, I investigated lifestyle traditions and changes. In particular, I focused on everyday life marked by a domination of the kolkhoz system, on its transformations and determinants — environmental, economic and social. The topic is linked to my earlier exploration of the countries of the former Soviet Union. The characteristic features of everyday culture of people living in the “Gervyatsky Krai” are, first of all: 1. memory of the traditions of the individual economy, 2. focus of the local economy on local kolkhoz (in this case the Gervyats Collective), 3. changes in the cultural landscape (e.g. elimination of khutors), 4. great importance of home gardens (priusadiebniye uchastky), 5. economic and cultural role of natural resources (forests, rivers), 6. scale of contemporary processes (migration, depopulation), 7. current manifestations of modernisation, e.g. promotion of agrogorods, 8. impact of the city of Vilnius on the life of the local population. From the point of view of the everyday life strategy of the local residents, other important contexts include their non-agricultural activities, family relationships, structure of age groups, importance of some institutions (e.g. schools, shops), evolution of the local identity.
