The article explores the strategies of practicing “Belarusianness” in the context of migration - by Belarusians who settled in Poland with their children. It is based on empirical research concerning the biographical context of their life situation, conducted using semi-structured in-depth interviews and casual conversations. As “Belarusianness” I define a range of criteria which influence the identity of the interviewees and which imply a sense of national distinctiveness. Another analysed aspect is the parenting strategies of the interviewees in view of their emigration to Poland, and how they influence the identity formation of second generation migrants, i.e. their children.

In the proposed article and its demonstrative approach, I put the question about the nature of close, intimate relationships in peasant families from the early twentieth century, which were separated by migration and maintained contact with their children through letters, with reference to the series of letters of John and Eve Stelmach (taken from The Polish Peasant in Europe and America by Thomas and Znaniecki). Referring to the paradigm of transnationalism, modern phenomena and research categories associated with migration of families, I try to show how the Stelmach family, Galician peasant farmers, tried to experience togetherness and feelings across the borders in the pre-technology era.

The purpose of this article is to present the various professional paths of highly qualified female migrants from Ukraine and Belarus, the most numerous groups of foreigners from outside the EU in Poland. The analysis is based on in-depth interviews with highly qualified female specialists, i.e. migrants who started work relevant to their education and/or specialist knowledge and did not have experience of working in typical “migrant” sectors (service industry, agriculture, care work, etc.). This article also provides an overview of the Ukrainian and Belarusian migration to Poland after the fall of the USSR.

The aim of this article is to discuss the socio-economic costs of the post 1990 transformation process in Ukraine resulting in the chronic feeling of discontent with one’s life, which results in the individuals and whole families’ decisions to migrate. I analyse the factors which account for the individuals’ subjective perceptions of their life situations and how they manifest themselves in the biographical experiences of the Ukrainian female migrants to Poland after 1989.
