Religia i nieheteroseksualność: stan debaty akademickiej i wybrane wątki badań prowadzonych w Polsce

The academic debate on “LGBT Christians” focuses on the issue of conflict between religion and homosexuality and on the ways of solving it. The source of this conflict is usually located within religious traditions which have created and maintained the negative image of homosexuality. In this context, particular believers are presented as individualized actors who activate a huge agency, while harmonizing their religiosity with sexuality. However, the author’s research conducted in Poland, especially among members of Faith and Rainbow, which is a group of “LGBT Christians”, calls for shifting the focus of the analysis from the individual agency into the social structure and locating experiences of the members of this community within various discursive and social interdependencies. The proposed interpretation takes into account the individuals’ entanglement in religious, medical and emancipatory discourses, as well as in the interplay between them. It also highlights the differences in the ways of integrating religion with sexual non-normativity at the personal level, which are conditioned by the individuals’ age and gender, as well as their social and denominational background.

Artykuł podejmuje kwestię przenikania się dyskursów o homoseksualności z osobistym doświadczeniem osób, które rozpoznają w sobie pragnienie homoerotyczne. Dotyczy on mężczyzn, którzy zdecydowali się na formację kapłańską, a później odstąpili od studiów seminaryjnych i dziś deklarują się jako homoseksualni lub biseksualni, w większości jako rzymscy katolicy. Pokazuje, że mężczyźni ci na etapie przystępowania do formacji i w jej trakcie ulegali nie tylko wyobrażeniom o homoseksualności kształtowanym przez Kościół rzymskokatolicki, ale także wyobrażeniom obecnym w szerszej przestrzeni dyskursywnej, które w Polsce ostatnich dekad dynamicznie się zmieniały. Związane z seksualnością samorozumienie uczestników badań wchodziło zatem w różne, specyficzne dla danego momentu historycznego, związki z odczuwanym przez nich powołaniem i funkcjonowaniem w społeczności seminaryjnej.

The article focuses on how discourses about homosexuality penetrate the personal experience of those aware of their homoerotic desire. It discusses the experience of men who undertook priestly formation, later departed from the seminary studies, and today declare themselves as homo- or bisexual, the majority as Roman Catholics. It shows that at the threshold and during the formation, these men were influenced by the ideas about homosexuality promoted not only within the Roman Catholic Church, but also in the wider discursive space – and those have dynamically changed in Poland of the last decades. Correspondingly, the sexuality-related self-understanding of the study participants came into various, specific to a given historical moment, relationships with their vocation.

Artykuł dotyczy biseksualności jako kategorii, która wymyka się strategiom tożsamościowego aktywizmu chrześcijan i chrześcijanek LGBT w Polsce. Ów aktywizm jest tożsamościowy z dwóch względów: po pierwsze, czerpie ze wzorców politycznej walki o uznanie prowadzonej przez organizacje LGBT, i po drugie, jawi się jako konieczny model działania w obrębie Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego, który wydaje się nie dostrzegać nienormatywnych tożsamości seksualnych, co przez katolików i katoliczki definiujących się jako geje i lesbijki odbierane jest jako umniejszające ich podmiotowość. Tożsamościowy aktywizm LGBT prowadzony w obrębie chrześcijaństwa nie jest w stanie reprezentować osób określających się jako biseksualne przede wszystkim w tej mierze, w jakiej reprodukuje on dychotomię homo–hetero. Tekst naświetla zatem specyficzną sytuację biseksualnych chrześcijan i chrześcijanek oraz mechanizmy ich wykluczania z działalności Wiary i Tęczy, jedynej ogólnopolskiej grupy, która określa się jako „chrześcijanie LGBT”. Relacjonuje on wyniki badań socjologicznych prowadzonych przez autorkę w latach 2011–2014.

The paper addresses bisexuality as a category that is omitted from the activism of LGBT Christians in Poland. This activism is identity-based for two reasons. First, it draws on patterns of political struggle for recognition conducted by LGBT organizations. Second, LGBT Christians consider the identity model to be necessary for activism within the Roman Catholic Church. To this time the Church has not recognized non-normative sexual identities – a stance that is perceived by those defining themselves as gays and lesbians as belittling their subjectivity. Identity LGBT activism within Christianity is not able to represent people describing themselves as bisexual primarily because such activism reproduces the homo-hetero dichotomy. Thus the paper highlights the specific situation of bisexual Christians and the mechanisms of their exclusion from the activities of Faith and Rainbow, the only nationwide Polish group describing itself as ‘LGBT Christians’. Findings from the author’s sociological research conducted in 2011–2014 are presented.

COVID-19 Pandemic, Mediatization and the Polish Sociology of Religion

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic restrictions limited access to religious services and forced religious organizations to move most activities online, thus amplifying the processes of mediatization. They have also brought to light the existing power relations and hierarchies among and within the Churches, among others in the context of minority-majority relations. This context opens up new avenues for research on the topics of mediatization and power relations. We argue that in order to give an accurate account of pandemic-related developments, sociology of religion would benefit from employing user-centric research perspectives and a constructivist concept of mediatization. Analyzing research done on the topic of religion and the media in Poland to date, we present the key premises of our research project deploying the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse, and highlight how it may be of use to Polish sociologists of religion.
