The article aims to introduce the fundamental features of the communicative conception of argumentation based on rhetorical and pragmalinguistic argumentation theories. Argumentation is defined as (linguistic) action grounded in accounting for a controversial position with the purpose of convincing listeners of its acceptability or in order to defend it when it is challenged. The basic form of the argumentation process is described using a three-component model which consists of the argument itself, the justified opinion and the warrant represented by the relationship between the previous components allowing the “plausibility transfer” from the argument to the disputed opinion (cf. Toulmin 2003). The article also deals with the conditions that must be met by convincing arguments, with stable content schemes of argumentation (topoi), and it seeks to answer the question of what the rationality of argumentation is based on, i.e. what the sources of its plausibility are.

This paper deals with indicators of argumentation in spoken language interaction, i.e. it investigates linguistic and other means used to design an utterance to be recognized by recipients as having an argumentative function. The paper combines elements of the theory of argumentation and conversation analysis, and it is based on data from Czech news interviews with two interviewees. In particular, the study focuses on the linguistic form of argumentation, its sequential position in interaction and its propositional content. The analysis reveals that the sequential position of argumentation (interactional context) is a factor more important for its identification than the linguistic form, but that the most important factor is represented by its propositional content, i.e. argumentation is predominantly content-defined.

The present study addresses the mixing of different genres, discourses and author identities in two autobiographically oriented documentaries. Based on the theory of communicative genres, the genres of (social) documentary, video diary and home movie are characterized. Then the relations between the elements of social documentary and video diary in the films Český žurnál: Exekuce (Czech Journal: Don’t Take My Life) and Epidemie svobody (Epidemic of Freedom) are analyzed. On the level of the internal structure of both films, two different thematically defined discourses are identified, realized through verbal and visual semiotic modes: autobiographical and social discourse. The analysis reveals that in Exekuce, social discourse prevails and elements of both discourses are mostly juxtaposed (discontinuous mixing), while in Epidemie svobody, characterized by the predominance of the autobiographical component, the two discourses are more interconnected (continuous mixing). Elements of social discourse can mostly be attributed to the genre of social documentary in both films, while the autobiographical discourse does not fully correspond to the genre of the video diary: these records of the authors’ lives have a hybrid character, thus representing a kind of “documentary diary”.

Scholars have previously conceptualized academic writing as both process and product. Academic phrasebanks are a tool in which these two conceptions intertwine, i.e., where the products, existing texts such as journal articles, are broken down into smaller units such as steps and phrases, which are then used in the process of producing new texts. In this article, we examine the possibilities and limits of collecting these smaller units for research and didactic purposes, presenting a newly established phrasebank in this context. First, we consider various scholarly and pedagogical approaches to academic writing. We then provide an overview of existing academic phrasebanks, primarily the seminal University of Manchester Academic Phrasebank created by John Morley, focusing on how its principles and structure have been utilized to create similar tools for other languages. We subsequently describe the design and creation of the Czech Academic Phrasebank, the innovative character of which is its link to the Czech National Corpus, specifically a subcorpus of Czech scholarly articles. The processes of conceptualizing the phrasebank, its basic units and functions, excerpting phrases, linking to the corpus, and the various problems encountered throughout are reflected. We conclude by outlining directions for the phrasebank’s use in Czech-language genre-based pedagogy.
