Katarzyna Smyczyńska A Girl in a BigCity. Identity and Urban Space in "Chicklit" Novels The aim of the article is to portray the contemporary genre of "chicklit" as representative of dilemmas faced by a modern woman in construing her identity against the background of city culture. The main theme of the paper and the focal point of the analysis of various texts is the relation between space and identity, discussed primarily with reference to the cultural theories of Michel de Certeau and Anthony Giddens. The protagonists of the genre find themselves functioning in the ideologically defined public sphere, where space is marked by designated gender roles and thus largely determines patterns of expected behaviour. The author argues that through their distinct treatment of the tension permeating such spaces and through a hitherto unencountered attitude and lifestyle, the heroines create a new type of identity, which although problematic and filled with internal paradoxes and conflicting desires, manages to leave an imprint on the city space and is ultimately responsible for its transformation.

In my article, I argue that Peter Sis’ Tibet Through the Red Box (1998) and the Polish edition of Uri Orlev's Granny Knits (first published in Hebrew in 1981) illustrated by Marta Ignerska (2009) represent two different forms of intergenerational remembering. The visual narratives in question are artistic portrayals of the narrators’ biographical memory, and in some sense it is possible to view both works as narratives in which intergenerational connectivity is an integral aspect of the story. However, in each book the symbolic return to childhood has a different character. In Orlev and Ignerska's book, the rigidly delineated categories of “childhood” and “adulthood” are not really applicable, as they merge on every possible level – in their formal, expressive, and philosophical aspects. In Sis’ narrative, the (visual) language may resemble conventions associated with children's literature, but it is primarily an element of the book's nostalgic message, not a signal of the narrator's authentic and permanent connection with his child self.

The article „Ethical gaze: the visual art of Sven Nordqvist” discusses the relationship between the two characters in the artist’s Festus and Mercury books and the narrative role played in this context by the space in which they live. Nordqvist’s illustrations deconstruct common notions of childhood and adulthood and ironically expose conventionality and hierarchical order often accepted unquestioningly by adults. The artist’s characterisation of the protagonists puts special emphasis on their compassionate attitude and concern for the other. Nordqvist’s visual art thus becomes a continuation of Janusz Korczak’s educational philosophy.
