The aim of the article is to present the figure of Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer – the new leader of the Christian Democratic Union, her political path and her worldview. An attempt was also made to evaluate her current political actions and indicate her chances of assuming the post of the Chancellor. Moreover, the subject of the research explores the direction of her political views, relating both to the party profile and internal affairs, as well as German political activity in the international arena. Although A. Kramp-Karrenbauer is considered Merkel’s successor in terms of presenting similar views and the manner of operation, the new leader made an attempt to create her own political profile. Therefore, the question remains open whether she will strive to continue Chancellor Merkel’s political legacy or peruse her own vision of the party leadership.

The social and political changes that have taken place in Germany since the late 1960s contributed to the creation of a new women's movement and the alteration in the status of women. These transformations were also evident in the voting preferences, mostly of the young women, who began to vote, not for the CDU as was previously the case, but for the left-wing parties. Therefore, the assumption of the Chancellor's office by Helmut Kohl in 1982 could not mean a continuation of the traditional policy of the Christian Democrats towards women; on the contrary, it had to lead to its alteration. A highly symbolic expression of that change was the national party congress on women’s issues held in Essen in 1985 and the appointment of Rita Süssmuth as the first Federal Minister of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. The new minister, who was guided by Christian values, attempted to adjust the Union’s policy towards women to the changed social realities, thus becoming a conservative reformer. Her views and actions relating for instance to the women's quota, extension of the institutional care over children or the pension for women, encountered opposition from the party. Her activity as the President of the Bundestag was also criticized on the grounds that she was involved in issues regarding the permittedness of abortion and marital rape – topics which were considered to be controversial by the Christian Democrats. However, because of the ability to engage in cross-party alliances and her conviction of the validity of her solutions, Süssmuth has become a symbol of the modern CDU policy towards women.

The evolution of the political party Alternative for Germany from the Eurosceptic party that emerged from the criticism of the German federal policy during the eurozone crisis, to the right-wing populist group that builds its political capital by promoting anti-immigration and racist slogans, has contributed to determining the party’s attitude towards women, their role in the society and gender equality. The purpose of this article is to present – on the basis of the analysis of the group’s programming documents as well as the political speeches of the party members in the media – how the AfD perceives the role of women in the German society, which model of gender relations it promotes and what its view is on the equality between men and women. Moreover, an attempt was made to answer the question about the appeal of the presented vision to the female electorate. The domination of the national conservative wing in the party caused the group’s allegiance to traditional social roles held by both genders, recognizes family as the highest value and treats women in an objective way, reducing their existence to reproductive and educational functions. The group negates the legislation in terms of implementation of the provisions of the German Basic Law on equality between women and men, as well as the execution of the gender equality policy in accordance with the European Union gender mainstreaming strategy. The migration crisis has also contributed to the political alteration by the group of the topics relevant from the point of view of the female part of the society and using those topics to picture the threat to the national security posed by foreigners with a different culture and religion. Narrative literature from the area under study was reviewed and the methodology of political sciences was employed.
