The main aim of this paper is to show how model of family changed through the centuries (especially in XIX and XX century). Objects of examinations are women’s autobiographies treated as very interesting archive of different topics – one of them is family. Family in women’s personal documents isn’t only a topic, but also it shapes private stories. Autobiographies in this perspective solidify stories about families and help to settle up with family memory, it positive and negative side. Gender aspects of narrations makes more visible cultural, related with customs and historical contexts shaping model of family. In this text traditional and unconventional families are going to be presented as well as relations between family members.

Tekst jest próbą wskazania wzajemnych zależności pomiędzy dwoma gatunkami literatury dokumentu osobistego – esejem i autobiografią, oraz dwiema kategoriami wewnątrz i ponadgatunkowymi – eseistycznością i autobiograficznością, możliwymi do uchwycenia w Widzeniu bliskim i dalekim Zofii Nałkowskiej. W antologii, składającej się z kilkudziesięciu zróżnicowanych gatunkowo tekstów, można zauważyć nakładanie się na siebie wymienionych cech, powodowane przez nie przekształcenia oraz ich łączenie się z twórczością powieściową i diarystyczną autorki. Zbiór tekstów, obejmujących pół wieku, zawierający zarówno teksty wspomnieniowe, podróżne, recenzje, odczytany z uwzględnieniem perspektywy krytycznofeministycznej, staje się cennym ogniwem historii polskiej eseistyki kobiet.

The text indicates the relations between two genres of literature of personal document – an essay and autobiography, and two categories within and beyond genres – “essayism” and autobiographical. They can be captured in Widzenie bliskie i dalekie (The vision nearby and distant) written by Zofia Nałkowska. In anthology, where several genre-rich texts were put together, one can notice the superimposing of the above-mentioned features, the transformations they made and their connection with the author’s novels and diaristic writing. The collection of texts covering half a century, encompassing memoirs, travel writings, reviews, read out with regard to the feminist perspective, becomes one of the most valuable item in the history of Polish essay written by women.

Artykuł koncentruje się na debiutanckim tomie Anny Świrszczyńskiej, a precyzyjniej: na próbach omówienia jego złożonej struktury, połączeń różnych poetyk, powracających motywów. Składająca się zarówno z liryków sensu stricto, jak i z próz poetyckich całość stanowi interesujący amalgamat nurtów awangardowego, katastroficznego i surrealistycznego (czy raczej korzystającego z osiągnięć surrealistycznych). Istotne jest również wskazanie roli, jaką odgrywa w analizowanych lirykach sztuka, nierzadko spowita aurą witalizmu, tak bliskiego dykcji skamandryckiej. Mając na uwadze przynależność poetki do tzw. Pokolenia 1910, swoistą osobność Świrszczyńskiej, funkcjonowanie poza ugrupowaniami poetyckimi, czerpanie z tradycji i ze współczesnych jej prądów literackich, autorka artykułu wydobywa specyfikę udanego, dojrzałego debiutu, w którym obok dynamizmu widoczne są coraz ciemniejsze tony, wskazujące na to, że liryczne kolaże Świrszczyńskiej nie tylko były piękne, ale i odnosiły się do kontekstów pozaliterackich – wpisywały się w nastroje katastroficzne, wyczuwalne na trzy lata przed wybuchem drugiej wojny światowej.

The paper concentrates on Anna Świrszczyńska’s debut book; precisely on attempts to discuss its complex structure, combinations of various poetics, recurrent motifs. The collection, composed both of lyric sensu stricto and of poetic prose, is an interesting amalgamate of avant-garde, catastrophic, and surrealist trend (though rather employing the surrealist achievements). Important in the analysed pieces is also an indication of the role played by the art, oftentimes cloaked with the atmosphere of vitalism—so close to the Skamander diction. Bearing in mind that the poetess belonged to co-called Generation 1910, her peculiar distinctness, functioning outside literary groups, as well as her deriving from tradition and from the literary trends contemporary to her, the author of the article extracts the specificity of Świrszczyńska’s successful and mature debut in which parallel to dynamism one discerns darker tones indicating that her lyric collages were not only beautiful, but also referred to non-literary contexts: they stuck in catastrophic moods felt three years before the outbreak of the World War III.

The main aim of this paper is to show different, sometimes shocking or surprising ways of treating illnesses in women’s autobiographies, mainly from XIX century. Women’s literature of personal document here is treated as a very interesting and trustworthy source of information about illnesses, their symptoms, doctor’s more or less pertinent diagnosis. Texts, here understood as archive of examples of stories about authoresses or their friends diseases, also creates a space where connections between social, historical contexts and proprieties are well seen, what makes more visible associations between history of medicine and history of literature.

Głównym celem artykułu jest prześledzenie sposobów leczenia, diagnozowania, opisywania objawów chorób, które trapiły autobiografki, ich znajomych lub podopiecznych. Szeroko pojęta literatura dokumentu osobistego autorstwa kobiet – głównie dziewiętnastowieczna, choć przywołane zostają także wcześniejsze publikacje, zostaje potraktowana jako wiarygodny, interesujący materiał źródłowy, dzięki któremu możliwe staje się nie tylko opowiedzenie o konkretnych dolegliwościach, lecz także ukazanie powiązań dyskursu medycznego z obyczajowym, czy szerzej, kulturowym. Stąd też autobiografie kobiet, w całości lub w znacznej mierze skoncentrowane na rejestrowaniu symptomów chorobowych, jawią się jako ciekawe i efektywne poznawczo składowe zarówno historii literatury, jak i historii medycyny.

The essay is concerned with the relation between sociological and literary aspects of autobiographical writing. Personal documents analysis appears as a diverse space where tools taken from literary and sociological theory can coexist and create new, useful categories of interpretation – life of single person and societies. Theories of narrative identities, experience as category of reading, writing and interpreting autobiographies (written by professional and nonprofessional authors), indispensable contexts become more visible thanks to possibilities arised by using mixed socio-literary methods. The most important aim of this text is to show how connections between two humanistic branches emphasize the versatility of autobiographical pact.

Tekst jest krótką prezentacją wybranych autobiografii (szeroko pojętych) i jednej powieści, autorstwa kobiet, w których ważniejszym z motywów jest podroż do Włoch. Traktowana rekreacyjnie, jako życiowa konieczność, chwila wytchnienia, dobrowolna, przymusowa, każdorazowo każe zastanowić się nad sposobami budowania narracji o włoskich wojażach, kieruje uwagę na strategie tożsamościowe. Włochy – widziane na ogół przez pryzmat estetycznych i kulturowych stereotypów stają się przestrzenią inicjacji, opuszczaną po swoistej przemianie. Mogą też stać się domem. Ważne jest to, że Italia jawi się tu jako przestrzeń wyjątkowa i pożądana.

The text is a brief presentation of selected autobiographies (broadly defined) and one novel, written by women, in which important issue is a journey to Italy. Treated as recreational, as a life necessity, a moment of respite, voluntary or imposed, each time makes reader to think of ways creating narrative pictures of Italian journeys, pays attention to the strategies of narrative identity. Italy – generally seen through the aesthetic and cultural stereotypes become a place of initiation, left after the specific transformation. It can also become a home. It is important to see that in women’s autobiographies Italy appears as a space unique and desirable.
