The article presents a concept of a study focusing on the mediatisation of terrorism. The author seeks to capture how the media construct (define) terrorism; she looks the selection of events which the media consider to be acts of terror as well as ways of hierarchising them. On this basis she attempts to reconstruct the media image of terrorism and terrorists. Her analysis begins with Niklas Luhmann’s concept of mass media, according to which in contemporary mediatised societies the media are the basic source of information about the world. They represent and construct particularly those areas of life we cannot reach directly. In the study the author used techniques and methods applied in corpus research and making it possible to analyse key words appearing in media materials concerning terrorism as well as lexemes used to describe the notions of “terrorist” and “terrorism”.

The model of alternative media presented in the paper illustrates a number of changes that have taken place in the sphere of media during the past few years. At the same it is an example of modern communication trends and innovations characteristic not only of subculture groups, but also of the entire web media space. By combining innovative communication solutions with the philosophy of radical social groups, Indymedia have created a communication and propaganda platform that counterbalances the traditional model of information flow, both in terms of the content and organisation. Leaving aside Indymedia’s ideological stance, their global success on the one hand serves as an example of active participation and media co-creation by non-professionals, and on the other, shows the possibility for creating media platforms alternative to the commercial media. Media products created in the web ecosystem of the media are often used by commercial media as sources of information.

The following paper presents an attempt at a semiotic analysis of socially and politically-oriented street art in the capital of Chile. Based on Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory of semiotics, Siegfried J. Schmidt’s constructivist communication theory, and using the methods of semiotic and discursive analysis by Gillian Rose, a reconstruction of the semantics of murals has been made. Murals are treated here as specific semiotic codes and are linked with social-political-ideological aspects. As a reference point, a mural has been chosen as a communication tool which is typical of Latin America, and also the codes typical in this area, which resulted from previous analyses.

W artykule podjęta została próba semiotycznej analizy społecznie i politycznie zaangażowanej sztuki ulicznej w stolicy Chile.
