At the beginning of the 21 st century, the rapid growth of scientific knowledge encourages the progress of high-quality technology, mobility information and services. This “galloping technology syndrome” has become a means of reification, warping the attitudes of modern man. Advances in technology have led to destruction of the Earth’s biosphere and pollution of the hydrosphere and the atmosphere, resulting in numerous lifestyle diseases caused by the toxic effects of chemical elements harmful to humans (led, cadmium, mercury, etc.). This difficult problem is investigated as part of interdisciplinary studies. This article explains how to educate society in the face of the disharmony of the threats to human dignity and health.

The article is structured according to the following issues (it applies a problem criterion): articles and tales for children, protection of species and animal welfare, nature in poetry, competitions for children, correspondence with children, popularization of artworks representing nature conservancy, entertainment column. The field of the research covers the period between 1937 and 1939. The scientific research is based on printed sources: Dziennik Urzędowy Ministerstwa Wyznań Religijnych i Oświecenia Publicznego [Official Journal of the Ministry for Religious Faith and Public Enlightenment] (for the years 1937-1939) and a periodical “Młody Przyjaciel Zwierząt i Kółko Przyrodnicze”, which was published in the Second Polish Republic in the period of 1937-1939.

The purpose of this article is to present and explain the activities of the Polish Animal Friendship League (founded in 1927) according to the “Świat Zwierzęcy” monthly (from 1934 – quarterly) that in 1937 changed its name into “Świat i Przyjaciel Zwierząt”. The magazine was the organ of the League (that later became the Polish Animal Protection League, and after reorganisation – the Union of Associations for the Protection of Animals of the Republic of Poland). In the article we assumed the following task criterion: the most important achievements of the Polish Animal Friendship League/Polish Animal Protection League are shown, its co-operation with other institutions in Poland and abroad, organisation and celebration of the Protection of Animals Day/Care for Animals Day. In the conclusion of the article we find that the Polish Animal Friendship League/ Polish Animal Protection League was the propagator of the idea and applied it in practice. It united animal lovers and educated the society, sensitizing people to the needs of animals and their hardships of life, the necessity to prevent animal abuse, e.g. cruelty during scientific research (vivisection), excessive exploitation (especially horses, often starved, and using them for work when sick or crippled). Our source is the magazine “Świat Zwierzęcy”/”Świat Zwierząt”, published in Warsaw in the years 1929–1939.

The aim of the article is to elaborate on the didactic and educational value of the issue of nature conservation featured in the magazine in the time between 1919 and 1939. The source basis consists of 309 issues of the mentioned periodical (weekly, monthly, biweekly, and then monthly again), the organ of the Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze [Polish Coutry-lovers Society]. The criteria of chronology and the addressed issue have been applied in the article. It presents the issue of nature conservation, the activity of Liga Ochrony Przyrody [League for Nature Conservation] within the scope of spreading the idea of nature conservation and active pro-ecological attitude of the Polish society, as well as the issueconcerning the Białowieża Forest and the richness and sights of the regional natural environment (to which much attention was paid also in the “Ziemia” magazine).

The aim of article is to analyze, criticize and interpret deliberately selected examples of printed sources – within the scope of ecological education in the Republic of Poland between the two World Wars (1918-1939). The said sources constitute antecedences of the newest directions of ecological education development in Poland, as well as they form a positive status of the tradition – Polish cultural heritage. During the discussed historical period one’s attention was drawn to the value of close relation between the nature and culture, and ecological education for the environment protection was understood as a social activity expressed as a cultural trend – culture – forming value of relations between a man and the natural environment. It was explained that culture forms a part of the environment whereas quality of the social and the natural environment as well as thinking and acting in terms of ecology constitute implication of the entirety of Polish cultural heritage, i.e. the aforementioned issues should not be discussed separately, but from the perspective of many aspects and a systemic approach.

The aim of this article is to justify/prove the following thesis by way of logical deduction: a human, as a potential being can develop (throughout the entire life) to become a rational and responsible being within the social and natural environment, provided that the “technical civilization” complies with the humanistic view of spiritual development of a person which constitutes an implication of international strategies in the second half of the 21st century.
