At the beginning of the 1990s the typical participants of the 'au pair' scheme were predominantly middle-class girls from Western Europe. However, this has changed in the last decades and girls from Eastern Europe have prevailed in the au pair stays which continue to be defined as 'cultural exchange'. Thus the meaning of the term 'au pair' has started to change, mainly because of the significantly different life experiences, material and structural backgrounds of au pairs from post-communist countries, such as Slovakia, the Czech Republic or Hungary, and because of the growing demand for a low-cost solution of child care in the West. The piecemeal transformation of the programme of cultural exchange to a part of the 'child care strategy' in Western European countries gives the au pair scheme an economic dimension hidden behind the official definition of the programme. This study, based on data from Internet agencies that mediate au pair stays, finds statistically significant differences in characteristics of an au pair from Eastern and Western Europe. It also states that there is coherence between the characteristics of au pairs and the economic situations of their countries of origin. The key differences in strategies of the 'Eastern' and 'Western' au pair are presented in the final typology.

The paper deals with the topic of gender equality perception in Slovakia. As an EU member since May 2004, Slovakia has introduced many anti discriminatory measures as a part of the accession process. An important part in the evaluation of the success rate of such measures is the collection of gender sensitive data. This study works with such data collected by a project supported by the EQUAL initiative. A comparison of public opinion perception of gender based inequalities in the Slovak labour market between 2002 and 2006 shows a relatively stable picture although some shifts towards the more 'household work doing men' and a dual career family can be observed. Even though the feeling that women assert their rights more is stronger then in 2002 some paradoxes do exist. Contrary to the EU average the public opinion in Slovakia sees the NGOs and the EU as the combatants of the discrimination rather than the national governments or the parliament. The article concludes with an appeal for collecting of sex segregated data and gender statistics as it sees them being essential for social theory building as well as for better social policy decisions.

The paper deals with the topic of the data archiving in the social sciences. It illustrates the positive influence of archiving on the methodological standards and the innovation of a research, which is based on a knowledge gained from the previously carried out research. The study proceeds with the history of the world-wide social sciences archive infrastructure and presents the Slovak Archive of Social Data (SASD, http:// sasd.fphil.uniba.sk or http:// sasd.sav.sk). It further analyses the importance of the data archiving for the participation in the cross-national comparative surveys and points to the possibilities that archiving infrastructure offers when solving the methodological issues in a cross-country research. The conclusion outlines the further development of the Slovak Archive of Social Data - expansion of the archive and the cataloguing of existing research where it appeals to a culture of the data sharing.
