The article presents an overview of the history of the Polish cultural relations with China. It covers the period from XII/XIII century to the year 2013. In the distant past Polish missionaries travelled to China and acquired knowledge on this country and its rich cultural heritage. The most prominent person of that epoch was Michal Boym, a devoted and courageous Jesuit, one of the best European specialist on China in XVII century. The establishment of diplomatic relations with the New China on 1949, was a turning-point in Polish-Chinese relations. Its concerned also cultural cooperation. Ever since started process of better reciprocal knowledge, especially in sphere of literature where even were some interaction. At the last years important role in cultural relations played a big projects as Polish participation in EXPO 2010 in Shanghai and the Year of Chopin. Increasing role played also initiatives of Polish cultural institutions in China and presence and development of teaching Chinese language at Universities and by Institutes of Confucius. The development of political cooperation between both countries and new Chinese initiatives concerning: bilateral relations, relations China with 16 Central and Eastern European countries and relations the EU – China permit to have great expectation for a future of Polish-Chinese cooperation, cultural cooperation included.

The Author describes and analyzes the achievements and experiences of Edward Kajdański against changing political situation, first in Harbin, and then generally in China. The Author emphasizes the outstanding role that E. Kajdański played in bringing closer to the Poles the Chinese culture, history and medicine, as well as in mutual acquaintance and recognition of both nations.

Bruno Schulz has recently been discovered as a writer in China. The first volume of his short stories Ulica Krokodyli [Crocodile Street] was published in 2009. From the very beginning Schulz’s writing became fascinating especially for young readers. Many Chinese experts claim that it is similar in some aspects to Kafka’s writing, although direct comparison of the works of these two writers reveals substantial differences. Yu Hua, young and popular writer in China, wrote an introduction to Ulica Krokodyli.

Artykuł początkowo przedstawia podstawowe prawdy wiary w obu religiach, które od razu pokazują zasadnicze rozbieżności pomiędzy nimi. Następnie dokonuje bardziej pogłębionej prezentacji problemów obu religii, usytuowanych na pograniczu wiary i praktyki religijnej. Wskazuje więc nadal na głębokie różnice, nieliczne podobieństwa, ale też na pewne oceny wzajemne obu religii, które pomimo wzajemnego szacunku, są krytyczne. Największa część artykułu dotyczy porównania w skrócie losów chrześcijaństwa obrządku rzymsko – katolickiego w Polsce i buddyzmu ludności Han w Chinach, bez wchodzenia w jego różnice z buddyzmem tybetańskim. Artykuł sygnalizuje pewne podobieństwa jak np. okresy prześladowań, ale też obecną zupełnie inną rolę w obu państwach.

At the beginning of this article the author presents the basis truths of two religions, which at a first glance reveal some fundamental incompatibilities. Then he thoroughly presents the problems of both religions, problems situated on the periphery of the faith and religious practice. The article draws attention to deep-rooted differences and to a few similarities, but also to the reciprocal valuation of both religions, which despite their mutual respect, remain critical of each other. The most comprehensive part of the article is a brief comparison of Roman Catholic Christianity in Poland and Han people’s Buddhism in China, without going into differences between the last mentioned and Tibetan Buddhism. The paper indicates some similarities, such as, for example, periods of persecutions, but also shows the completely different role that those two religions play currently in both countries.
