Polarization of Rural Settlements in the Lubelskie Voivodship as a Result of Population Changes

Rural settlements, as a basic element of space, are dynamic structures subject to changes due to various factors determining the conditions of their development and functional transformations. Certain directions of changes occurring in rural areas are characteristic of each historical period. They are particularly evident in demographic and socio-cultural processes, in rural economies, and living conditions of residents. This article analyses population changes in rural areas of the Lubelskie Voivodship in the years 1950–2011. Strong polarization of settlements was observed. Considering the current trends, the author constructed two forecasts (short- and long-term) of transformations in the structure of rural settlements.

Osiedla wiejskie, podstawowy element przestrzeni, są strukturami dynamicznymi, podlegającymi zmianom pod wpływem różnych czynników kształtujących warunki ich rozwoju i przekształceń funkcjonalnych. Dla każdego okresu historycznego charakterystyczne są pewne kierunki zachodzących na wsi zmian widoczne przede wszystkim w procesach demograficznych, społeczno-kulturowych, w wiejskiej ekonomii i w warunkach życia mieszkańców. W niniejszym artykule przeanalizowano zmiany ludnościowe wsi województwa lubelskiego w latach 1950–2011. Zauważono silną polaryzację osadnictwa. Uwzględniając aktualne trendy skonstruowano dwie prognozy (krótko- i długoterminową) przemian w strukturze osiedli wiejskich.

This paper deals with the myth of Minyas’ daughters in the novel Frenzy by Percival Everett, a Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern California. He has brought forward a new interpretation of that myth in his book. The main theme is the story of god Dionysus based on Euripides’ Bacchae to which the author adds other mythes. References to Ovid, Aelian and Antoninus Liberalis can also be found.

This paper deals with one of the most popular ancient myths among the writers of the twentieth century—namely the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Percival Everett, a professor of the University of California, has brought forward a new interpretation of that myth in his novel Frenzy. The main subject-matter is the story of Dionysus based on Euripides’ Bacchae, and narrated by the god’s assistant Vlepo. The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice constitutes an interlude within that story. References to Ovid and Virgil can also be found, as Everett has added fragments of Metamorphoses and Georgica to his version of the myth. His interpretation is focused on psychological aspects of the story. Orpheus in Frenzy is a man overpowered by grief and longing. His behaviour seems to be caused by madness. This becomes especially visible when he learns of the loss of Eurydice. At the other hand, Eurydice seems to be confident of herself. She is an active person, not a passive one unlike the ancient authors have depicted her. The novel Frenzy of Percival Everett deserves attention from scholars who study the reception of antiquity.

Peryferyjny charakter to jedna z najważniejszych cech Polski Wschodniej, a sam region często identyfikuje się poprzez rozmaite negatywne zjawiska na płaszczyźnie społeczno--ekonomicznej. Duży wpływ na tę sytuację mają procesy ludnościowe, w tym problem wyludniania się, który dotyczy znacznej części obszarów wiejskich makroregionu. Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza wpływu zmian demograficznych zachodzących na wiejskich obszarach przygranicznych Polski Wschodniej w latach 2002–2015 na wybrane obszary życia społeczno-ekonomicznego, a także próba określenia skali zmian i ich konsekwencji w ujęciu przestrzennym w sferze edukacji, przedsiębiorczości, budownictwa i mieszkalnictwa oraz finansów publicznych.

One of the most important features of Eastern Poland is its peripheral character. This region is often associated with various negative socio-economic phenomena. Population processes, including the problem of depopulation, affect a large part of rural areas of the macroregion. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of the demographic changes occurring in rural areas of Eastern Poland in 2002–2015 on selected areas of socio-economic life, as well as to attempt to determine the scale of the changes and their spatial consequences in the field of education, entrepreneurship, construction, housing, and public finances.

The peripheral rural areas of the eastern part of the Lubelskie Voivodship are very attractive in terms of their natural and cultural environment, however, despite its various tourism resources, the region’s potential in this respect is not fully exploited. The paper presents the main tourism resources of the discussed region and indicates opportunities for using them in various forms of tourism and as potential tourism products. Furthermore, the current development level of the tourism function in the region has been identified, as well as actions aimed at improving it.

Wiejskie obszary peryferyjne wschodniej części województwa lubelskiego cechują się dużą atrakcyjnością środowiska przyrodniczego i kulturowego. Pomimo posiadania różnorakich zasobów turystycznych potencjał regionu w tym zakresie nie jest w pełni wykorzystywany. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia główne zasoby turystyczne omawianego obszaru i wskazuje możliwości ich wykorzystania turystycznego w zakresie form turystyki i potencjalnych produktów turystycznych. Ponadto określony został obecny stopnień rozwoju funkcji turystycznej w regionie i wskazane działania, które należy podjąć w celu wzmocnienia funkcji turystycznej.

Metropolitan aspirations of cities in East Poland during the process of their development

Białystok, Lublin, and Rzeszów are the three largest cities in eastern Poland, and the capitals of their provinces. They each have metropolitan ambitions, and based on partner agreements with the authorities of their neighbouring districts they initiated the establishment of metropolitan areas where they became the main centres. This article undertakes an analysis of a number of elements of each of these metropolitan areas in order to compare their position, and to give an assessment of the development of their metropolitan functions. The analysis concerned their demographic, social, economic and cultural parameters. Results of this research show that none of these analysed cities has yet developed sufficient functions coherent with the European metropolitan network. Each of them is a strong regional centre of national importance. Statistical analysis of the data shows no strong leader among these three metropolitan areas. The weak position of the Białystok Metropolitan Area is evident due to its particularly disturbing demographic processes which offer no chance for population development in the area or growth of its social potential. The Rzeszów Metropolitan Area maintains the best social-demographic and economic indices and it is also the most compact, coherent area with the least distance to its metropolitan centre.

Assessment of the effect of new tourism products on the economic recovery of rural areas in the context of empirical research on selected communes of the Lublin Voivodeship

This paper presents examples of several original tourism products available in the rural areas of the Lublin Voivodship (Eastern Poland) which in the context of empirical research have contributed to the development of tourism. The primary objective is to determine how selected tourism products are created, and their role in the development of the tourism function and local development in general. The article employs the case study method and concerns four tourism products in four communes of the Lublin Voivodeship. An assessment of the effect of the created product on local development was based on research employing a diagnostic survey in the form of a questionnaire and interviews. The interviews concerned the process of the creation of a tourism product and its effects was undertaken among entrepreneurs from the tourism industry, and the questionnaire concerning the effects of the resulting tourism product on local development was addressed to residents. The survey results showed that in each of the analysed cases, the creation of the tourism product could have considerably contributed to the development of the tourism function and economic development of rural areas where such products were created. Socio-economic phenomena accompanying the development of the tourism function are perceived as positive by residents of selected communes that see the development of tourism as a chance to improve their image and improve living conditions.

W opracowaniu zaprezentowano przykłady kilku oryginalnych produktów turystycznych, dostępnych na obszarach wiejskich województwa lubelskiego, które w świetle przeprowadzonych badań empirycznych przyczyniły się do rozwoju funkcji turystycznej w miejscach swojego występowania. Głównym celem artykułu jest określenie, w jaki sposób zostały wykreowane wybrane produkty turystyczne i jaka jest ich rola w rozwoju funkcji turystycznej i w rozwoju lokalnym w ogóle. W artykule wykorzystano metodę analizy przypadków, która dotyczyła czterech produktów zlokalizowanych w czterech gminach województwa lubelskiego. Oceny wpływu wykreowanego produktu turystycznego na rozwój lokalny dokonano na podstawie badań przeprowadzonych metodą sondażu diagnostycznego w formie kwestionariusza ankiety i wywiadu bezpośredniego. Wywiady na temat procesu tworzenia produktu turystycznego i jego efektów przeprowadzono z przedsiębiorcami z branży turystycznej, natomiast kwestionariusze ankiety dotyczące wpływu powstałego produktu turystycznego na rozwój lokalny skierowano do mieszkańców gmin objętych badaniem. Wyniki pokazały, że w każdym z badanych przypadków wykreowanie produktu turystycznego mogło mieć znaczący wpływ na rozwój funkcji turystycznej oraz rozwój gospodarczy obszarów wiejskich, w których te produkty powstały. Zjawiska społeczno-ekonomiczne towarzyszące rozwojowi funkcji turystycznej są pozytywnie postrzegane przez mieszkańców badanych gmin, którzy w rozwoju turystyki upatrują szansę na poprawę warunków ich życia oraz wizerunku ich miejscowości.
