The article is dedicated to one of the most important discussions in the history of Polish literature of 20th century: a long dispute between Zbigniew Herbert and Czeslaw Milosz, which found its spectacular end in the 90-ties, but had been started in the middle of the 60-ties. Apart of a personal friendship and later on a kind of Hassliebe, which tied both poets for decades, this dispute show us some fundamental differences in the understanding of Polish tradition and patriotism. The author describes among other facts Zbigniew Herbert’s intention of writing a book entitled A Year of a Lamb, which was assumed as a kind of the answer for Milosz’es diary A Year of the Hunter.

Autor tekstu śledzi literackie i malarskie świadectwa egzystencjalnego doświadczenia, jakim jest skonfrontowanie się z własną starością i perspektywą nieodległej śmierci, a dokładniej: zderzenie realnego, wiążącego się ze schyłkiem życia stanu z jego o wiele wcześniejszym, młodzieńczym wyobrażeniem. Ukazuje spotkanie człowieka starego ze sobą samym, młodszym o kilka dziesięcioleci – spotkanie pozwalające doświadczyć zarówno osobistej tożsamości, jak i głębokiej przemiany, dokonującej się w ciągu życia. Jego interpretacje oparte są o utwory literackie oraz świadectwa wspomnieniowe Aleksandra Wata i Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza, a także twórczość malarską Józefa Czapskiego.

The author of the text closely follows the literary and painterly evidence of existential experience, i.a. the confrontation with one’s old age and the perspective of encroaching death, or, more precisely, a confrontation of the actual state associated with the end of life with its much earlier, youthful image. A presentation of an encounter of an old man and his decades younger self – a meeting that makes it possible to experience both personal identity and profound transformation taking place in the course of a lifetime. The interpretations are based on the literary works and reminiscences-testimonies by Aleksander Wat and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, as well as paintings by Józef Czapski.
