Information Science in the Mirror of the Digital Humanities: Some Epistemological Observations

PURPOSE/THESIS: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the similarities and differences between the epistemologies of information science and the digital humanities in the light of the turns of information science. APPOACH/METHODS: Numerous viewpoints, discernible from the literature, related to the epistemologies of the two discipUnes have been analysed and compared. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Despite differences in their disciplinary backgrounds, information science and the digital humanities have much in common. As serious self-reflection is needed for both disciplines, they may benefit from analysing the achievements and deficiencies of the each other. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS: Both epistemologies are in forming, so only a snapshot could be taken on their present reflection. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The paper intends to be an add-on to the body of knowledge about the epistemologies information science, the digital humanities and the relationship between them.

CEL/TEZA: Celem artykułu jest omówienie podobieństw i różnic pomiędzy epistemologią nauki o informacji i humanistyki cyfrowej w świetle zmian zachodzących w tej pierwszej. KONCEPCJA/METODY BADAŃ: Przeanalizowano i porównano szereg punktów widzenia wyróżnionych w literaturze przedmiotu, dotyczących epistemologii dwóch omawianych dziedzin. WYNIKI I WNIOSKI: Pomimo różnic w ich dziedzinowych korzeniach, nauka o informacji i humanistyka cyfrowa mają ze sobą wiele wspólnego, a analiza ich osiągnięć i braków może przynieść znaczące korzyści dla obu dziedzin. OGRANICZENIA BADAŃ: Obie epistemologie znajdują się w stadium formowania, można zatem sporządzić jedynie zarys ich obecnego kształtu. WARTOŚĆ POZNAWCZA: Artykuł stanowi uzupełnienie dotychczasowej wiedzy w zakresie epistemologii nauki o informacji, humanistyki cyfrowej oraz łączących je relacji.

PURPOSE/THESIS: This paper identifies some of the tasks and roles that academic libraries have to perform in order to react to the emergence of Research 2.0. APPROACH/METHODS: The argument is based on a non-exhaustive review of the recent literature. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Academic libraries should respond to the emergence of Research 2.0 by filling niches in services provided by other academic units. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS: As a rule, only the literature of the second half of the 2010s was taken into consideration. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The tasks identified in this paper may not seem urgent today, but the likelihood that they will become an imperative in the future is high. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The issues identified in this paper are already a part of everyday best practices in several countries.

CEL/TEZA: W artykule wskazano niektóre zadania i role, które biblioteki akademickie muszą spełnić w odpowiedzi na pojawienie się tzw. badań 2.0. KONCEPCJA/METODY BADAŃ: Argumentacja oparta jest na niewyczerpującym przeglądzie najnowszej literatury. WYNIKI I WNIOSKI: Biblioteki akademickie powinny reagować na pojawienie się badań 2.0, wypełniając nisze w usługach, które temu typowi badań zapewniają inne jednostki akademickie. OGRANICZENIA BADAŃ: Zasadniczo w przedstawionych rozważaniach wykorzystano jedynie piśmiennictwo, które ukazało się po 2015 r. ZASTOSOWANIA PRAKTYCZNE: Zadania wskazane w niniejszym artykule nie muszą wydawać się pilne dzisiaj, ale prawdopodobieństwo, że w przyszłości staną się imperatywem jest wysokie. ORYGINALNOŚĆ?WARTOŚĆ POZNAWCZA: Zagadnienia wskazane w niniejszym artykule już dzisiaj są częścią codziennych dobrych praktyk w wielu krajach.

Internet resource guides: principles and generations

Besides knowing the differences between search engines and resource guides, it is useful to be familiar with the content selection criteria used by library resource guides. This article focuses on the selection guidelines of the well-known Librarians' Internet Index, primarily serving the needs of public libraries. Two new services are also presented: Intute, a British academic resource guide is a representative of a new generation of integrated resource guides, while WorldWideScience.org is not exactly a resource guide, but a free global science gateway that enables searches among selected sources.

PURPOSE/THESIS: This paper outlines the role of data curation in the context of Research 2.0 and Research Data Management. APPROACH/METHODS: The argument is based on a non-exhaustive review of the literature. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Despite the relative vagueness and variety of definitions of data curation, academic libraries should engage in it. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS: The study focused mainly on theoretical writings. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The worldwide challenge associated with Research Data Management and data curation. Several countries and institutions have already answered the challenge, but the overall level of its recognition is low, and thus there is a need to raise awareness of its importance. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The premise of the argument is based on the assumption that views on data are changing.

CEL/TEZA: W artykule przedstawiono rolę data curation w kontekście Nauki 2.0 i zarządzania danymi badawczymi. KONCEPCJA/METODY BADAŃ: Wykorzystano krytyczną analizę wybranego piśmiennictwa przedmiotu. WYNIKI I WNIOSKI: Pomimo względnej niejasności i wielości definicji terminu “data curation”, biblioteki akademickie powinny zaangażować się w związane z nim działania. OGRANICZENIA BADAŃ: W artykule skupiono uwagę głównie na publikacjach opisujących podejście teoretyczne. ZASTOSOWANIE PRAKTYCZNE: Obserwowane na całym świecie przedsięwzięcia związane z zarządzaniem danymi badawczymi i data curation. Wiele krajów i instytucji podjęło już działania na tym polu, ale ogólny poziom rozpoznania tematu nadal pozostaje niewysoki, dlatego potrzebne jest zwiększenie świadomości dotyczącej znaczenia tego zagadnienia. ORYGINALNOŚĆ/WARTOŚĆ POZNAWCZA: Przesłanki przedstawione w artykule oparte są na założeniu, że zmienia się podejście w postrzeganiu danych.

Open access is a possible answer of researchers and (to a lesser extent) librarians to the problem of the rising prices of academic journals. This alternative utilizes the new opportunities offered by electronic publishing. Although the number of Hungarian articles dealing with this topic is small, it is worth reviewing the relevant literature.
