Lucius Annaeus Seneca, called the Younger or Philosopher, is the most important figure of the Roman Imperial Period. This Stoic philosopher made a lasting contribution to Stoicism. Seneca lived during difficult times and he was engaged in politics during the reign of his disciple, Cesar Nero. Seneca agrees with earlier Stoics, that God is corporeal and is a part of the world. Seneca discusses virtue as the ideal of “becoming like God” and thinks, that the virtuous man is an equal to the God. So he claims, that we have to learn virtues. However in this case we have the help of God, who gives us the intellect when we are born. Seneca reminds, that the life is not easy and only the indications of the philosophy concerning virtue preserve from the unjust fortune.

Wisdom is foresight. Philosophical thought of Seneca the Younger about the virtue of prudentia One of the most important themes in the literary legacy of Seneca, a Roman stoic philosopher and tutor of young Nero, is the science on virtues. Withing its aretology there is the virtue of prudence, prudentia, whose definition is: facienda providere. By way of example, we may understand it as predicting the effects of, for instance, enacting a specific law. The virtue of prudentia refers also to proper counseling, actually in different situations: prudentia suaserit; it recommends to make good use of present times, to care for the future, think and deliberate. To live prudently means to live for the moment, to take advantage of our life time of in a good way.

Damalewicz należy do uznanych polskich pisarzy epoki baroku i w ostatnich latach budzi coraz większe zainteresowanie badaczy XVII wieku. Renarda Ocieczek poświęciła mu w swej pracy rozdział zatytułowany „Piec babiloński” i „gałązka oliwna” – dwa ulubione znaki literackie ks. Stefana Damalewicza. Przyczynek do obrazowania barokowego6 . Justice is one of the most important features in the government of the State. The Roman philosopher and politician Seneca wrote much about it. Seneca wanted the sovereigns to be philosophers as it was in the old days, the golden age. Good laws were always created by wise men like Solon or Licurg. It is the love of virtue that forms righteous men and helps them to deal with changing fortune. Pride and terror do not assure the power of the rulers in the future. Many bad sovereigns like Dionysius of the Syracuse, Alexander the Great, Pompey or Caesar, who brought many disasters on people, had themselves experienced the fatal results of power. Somebody's ill luck will never bring happiness to anyone.
