Otto and Reich families are distant ancestors of the author. They were evangelical peasant families living on the Polish lands (near Huta Dłutowska) from about 1800. Later they moved from Huta Dłutowska to the neighboring villages: Kolonia Anielin and Rokicie. Members of the Otto family were farmers, cultivating farmlands under a leasehold law (Polish „okupnicy”), and carpenters. On the other hand, members of the Reich family worked in mills in Jochim (Joachin), Kozica, Półtalarek. Members of both families were married to evangelical German settlers. The marriage of Marianna Otto was, however, an exception. She was married to Maciej Rutkowski in 1828. Their children were brought up as Catholics.
The certificates of the parish of Opole go back to 1635. Death certificates are preserved from 1771. Owing to an analysis of these certificates, the oldest inhabitants of the parish in that era, being 60 and older, were recognized. Many of the long-living parishioners were connected with the family of Masztalerz (Mastalerz) – Tarachowski, an alleged 103-year old woman. The oldest inhabitants of the parish were also descended from the family of Możdżeń, Bernacik, Maciąg, Dulęba, Marczowski, and many other ones. The babtism certificates allowing to verify the age given at death certificate were found for 19 long-living people. Thanks to the data, after comparing birth dates of the dead people, it turned out that the age given in death certificates was higher than it was supposed to be. When it comes to the aforementioned centenarian, it was higher by 27 years, and for some the alleged 90-year olds it was higher by 22 years, and for the alleged 80-year olds higher by 10 years, for 70-year old by 5,16 years, and for 60-year olds by 0,83. The reason for the mistakes is to be sought probably in little knowledge about the age of a dead person among his/her relatives, as well as among the ones who wrote the certificates

- ks. Michała Mieczko Żdzenickiego.
Franciszek and Jadwiga Gawrońscy, the citizens of Uniejów, who wanted to build a house near the city market but did not have sufficient funds, decided to take out a loan. Itzig Łęczycki, a Jewish merchant, agreed to lend them 1000 Polish złotys, which were to be paid to them in instalments during the process of construction. In return he could rent for three years a part of this house which was intended for a stall. After that time Gawrońscy were obliged to return the whole sum to the lender. The burghers’ shortage of funds was probably due to a fire in the city some time earlier. Jews, on the other hand, having no property in Uniejów at that time, had to rent premises from burghers-possessors.
The biography tells the story of a long-lived Stefania Madej (1901–2010) living in Dobroń near Lodz. Stefania came from a peasant family. Her father worked hard all his life, thanks to which he became the owner of a medium-sized farm. Together with her siblings Stefania helped parents on the farm at the expense of her education. She married a farmer, still remaining in the provinces. When the World War II was over she cared for the sick husband and after his death, in the absence of children, gradually got rid of an agricultural land. Thus she remained destitute. However, state financial assistance and care of a niece let her live in good condition almost 109 years.

Smoking tobacco was very popular in the 18th century among all social groups. The custom of smoking in company was also noted in municipal books from the Old Polish period. Several entries in municipal records from the year 1763 address a dispute over a pipe with tobacco. A group of representatives of local elite gathered in a house of one of the burghers. The mayor of Uniejów smoked a pipe borrowed from a merchant of Zduńska Wola. The merchant demanded that he return the tobacco, and disrespectfully dismissed the offer to pay for the tobacco, whereupon the irritated mayor slapped him on the face. A fight ensued, in which both of them sustained numerous wounds and bruises. The mayor was sentenced to a week’s imprisonment. This scene reflects the mentality of those times, i.e. impulsiveness of hot-tempered burghers in resolving even such minor disputes.
Notarial acts mainly consist of records on financial agreements. At the beginning of the nineteenth century they included contracts of which peasants were one party. Matrimonial agreements edited in the very article were, in fact, the landowner’s approval of his serf getting married to a bachelor coming from beyond his lands. At the same time the groom was obliged to stay in the village of his wife-to-be. Such contracts were to guarantee landlords that their serfs would not leave the estate. The third agreement was made as to divide chattel between the quarrelling couple who decided to divorce and end their marriage.
Dochody z propinacji stanowiły ważną pozycje w budżecie Szadku w XIX w. Zyski z produkcji i sprzedaży alkoholu należały do mieszczan posesjonatów, którzy wybierali swych przedstawicieli w celu dysponowania dochodami.

Revenues from taproom constituted a major item in the budget of Szadek in XIX century. Profit from producing and selling liquor belonged to real estate owners, who chose their proxies to administer the income. Comparison of lists of estate owners contained in letters of attorney from 1852 and 1862 made it possible to establish that only 1/3 of those burghers appeared in both lists. This indicates that during a decade there was considerable exchange of property owners in Szadek. The majority of them (58%) were literate. The families which whose members were most numerous in the group of estate owners in Szadek are Łazuchiewicz and Woszczalski.
W 1808 roku wprowadzono na ziemiach polskich instytucję publicznego notariatu. Pierwsze transakcje zawarte w 1809 r. w Uniejowie zapisano w księdze notarialnej powiatu warckiego.

In 1808, the institution of public notary was introduced on Polish territories. The first transactions conducted in 1808 were entered in the notarial register of the Warta district. The majority of those records concerned the investments of one of the richest citizens of Uniejów, Stanisław Pieczyński. He made many purchases at that time, mostly in Uniejów, including land, a brewery, a ruined house owned by burghers named Ptaszkiewicz, and a property formerly belonging to a local clergyman. S. Pieczyński also donated a large sum of money to a hospital in Uniejów which catered for the poorest inhabitants of the city. These transactions are testimony to his affluence, which allowed him for investing in real estate and for charitable actions.
