The dual purpose of this article is to find out the importance and characteristics of marriages between foreigners and Spaniards and to study the opinions of the Spanish population on the possibility of their children having affective relationships with foreigners, since this is becoming an important element in the definition of the marriage market opportunity structure. For the first goal, data were acquired from the Movimiento Natural de Población (Vital Statistics) statistical source. For the second, data were taken from the national survey on attitudes of the Spanish population toward immigrants taken by the ASEP Company. Firstly, the results show that there is a gradual increase in mixed marriages, although there are differentiated patterns between men and women. Secondly, Spaniards are against one of their family members marrying a foreigner.

Immigrants going to Almería (Spain) are mainly joining the intensive farming sector such as greenhouses, though nowadays they are present in other areas such as construction and restaurant industries as well as domestic service. Some immigrants in order to escape and overcome market segmentation run their own ethnic businesses in the county. The ruling hypothesis is that, once an immigrant is established as an autonomous worker in the labour market, a whole ethnic economy develops. Besides this is an alternative option for immigrants instead of going through the segregation and discrimination which are constant in other sectors. The same way, the importance of the reception environments in general through the integration process, and more specifically in the autonomous labour market is highlighted as well.

In just a few decades, with the arrival of immigrants from many different places, Spain has become a multi-ethnic society. Facing these increased streams has been a huge challenge to Spanish society. This article examines the evolution of feelings toward immigration in Spain (2000–2007) with data from a country-wide survey. The results show increasing hostility toward immigrants. The variables that contribute most to explaining this phenomenon are competition and threat, both individual (salaries, jobs or welfare resources) and group (national identity).

Immigration in recent decades has configured a more multilingual space than there has ever been before in Spain. The double purpose of this study was to discover self-reported use of language by foreigners and their linguistic competence in both formal and informal Spanish environments. An Index of Linguistic Competence in Spanish (ILCS) based on oral, phonetic, written and comprehension capabilities was designed for this. Data were from a survey given to the foreign population aged 14 to 18 residing in the Province of Almeria (Spain). The results show that the level they have acquired is lower than native students. Furthermore, there are considerable differences among the foreigners themselves by age, years of residence in Spain, years in school, and origin.
