The text provides a detailed interpretation of the poem Niewygoda (Discomfort), written by Iwaszkiewicz at the end of his life, situated among other achievements of his late poetry and confronted with his diary entries. The main issues addressed here concern the meanings that arise at the level of versification, lexis, style and composition of the analyzed work. The poet uses tropes that constitute a departure from his earlier typical poetics characterized by discretion and moderation. This poem becomes a poignant, deeply personal confession filled with a dramatic sense of somatic pain of old age and the intuition of approaching death.

It reminds about his most crucial interpretive and editorial achievements, sketches his academic path, and presents his figure from the perspective of personal reminiscences.

W recenzji omówiono książkę Pawła Paszka „Aleksander Wat: forma życia. Studium o pisaniu, doświadczeniu, obecności” (2021), przynoszącą drobiazgową egzegezę dwóch utworów Aleksandra Wata: poematu „JA z jednej strony i JA z drugiej strony mego mopsożelaznego piecyka” (1920) oraz cyklu „Pieśni wędrowca”, otwierającego tom „Wiersze śródziemnomorskie” (1962). Przemiana, jaka dokonuje się między młodzieńczym a dojrzałym tekstem, według badacza nie zmienia istoty pisarstwa Wata, nie burzy swoistego constans wyznaczanego przez czynnościową koncepcję tekstu, mającego być pisaniem-działaniem. Erudycyjne rozważania przynoszą wiele interesujących sugestii, otwierają nieoczywiste konteksty i inspirują do nowego odczytania wielokrotnie już analizowanych utworów. Nowatorstwo i oryginalność nierzadko rozpływają się jednak w dygresyjnym toku wywodu, w metaforycznych, piętrzących się dopowiedzeniach, w retorycznie rozbudowanych eskapadach, w repetycjach wcześniej podejmowanych kwestii, co dodatkowo zaciemnia sens tych skomplikowanych utworów.

The review takes up Paweł Paszek’s book “Aleksander Wat: forma życia. Studium o pisaniu, doświadczeniu, obecności” („Aleksander Wat: A Form of Life. A Study on Writing, Experience, Presence, “2021), a detailed exegesis of Aleksander Wat’s two works: juvenile “JA z jednej strony i JA z drugiej strony mego mopsożelaznego piecyka” (“ME from One Side and ME from the Other Side of My Pug Iron Stove,” 1920) and “Pieśni wędrowca” (“Songs of a Wanderer”), the first cycle of “Wiersze śródziemnomorskie” (“Mediterranean Poems,” 1962). The transformation that took place between the juvenile and the mature writing does not change, according to Paszek, the nature of Wat’s composition, neither does it distort the specific constans marked by text’s functional conception, according to which a text is writing-creating. Erudite considerations offer numerous stimulating suggestions, open uncommon contexts and inspire to new readings of the pieces that have to this day been repeatedly investigated. Innovation and originality not infrequently disperse in discursive line of reasoning, in metaphorical and piled up additions, in rhetorically expanded escapades and, ultimately, in reiterating previously raised issues, all of which blur the sense of the intricate literature.

In an interview with Krystyna Pietrych and Tomasz Cieślak, Krystyna Poklewska, professor emerita of the Łódź University, discusses the first years of the Faculty of Philology and Polish Studies in Łódź. It was also when she started her studies after leaving the destroyed Warsaw. She mentions numerous great individuals who used to work there, such as Jan Dürr-Durski, Samuel Sandler, Stefan Kawyn or Zdzisław Skwarczyński. The Professor considers her own career as a scholar: her earliest years marked by the strong influence of Kawyn, until the most recent time, which found her with inexhaustible passion for working with the literature of Polish Romanticism.
