This contribution deals with prepositions in Slovak and Polish. In the first chapter we analyse the basic (primary) meaning of both Slovak and Polish prepositions - a spatial meaning - which bears a great variety of nuances. The subject of a contrastive analysis in the second chapter is one of the nuances: local (static) meaning 'near, in the vicinity, not far from'. We aimed to describe and compare its expression by means of primary prepositions in Slovak and Polish. The comparison reveals that aside from many concordances and similarities between the languages following from the common origin of Slovak and Polish, one can also identify a lot of differences in the expression of this meaning resulting from the uniqueness of the development of both languages. This contrastive analyses has weight specialy for practical needs of teachers, students, translators and speakers.
