This paper is based on a fragment of a qualitative study (compliant with the paradigm of ontological constructivism, idiographic epistemology and interpretative methodology) taken up as part of the doctoral dissertation currently in the making, dealing with professional culture of IT specialists. The paper substantiates the need to redefine the notion of 'professionalism' due to the altering image of social life in its economic, technological and cultural aspects, and the new professions emerging as a result of that process. The empirical part is concerned with self-identification of IT specialists within their professional group and reveals the ambiguity of the notion of 'IT specialist' in the respondents' system of meanings, as well as the incongruity of a common perspective of the scope of meaning of the term with its further specified scope, seen from the internal viewpoint of the IT specialists themselves.

Niniejszy artykuł powstał w oparciu o fragment badań jakościowych (zgodnych z paradygmatem ontologicznego konstruktywizmu, epistemologią idiograficzną i metodologią interpretatywną), podjętych w ramach pisanej obecnie rozprawy doktorskiej, dotyczącej kultury profesjonalnej informatyków. W artykule uzasadniona zostaje konieczność redefinicji pojęcia "profesjonalizmu", ze względu na zmieniający się obraz życia społecznego w sferze ekonomicznej, technologicznej i kulturowej oraz wyłaniające się na skutek tego procesu nowe profesje. Część empiryczna dotyczy samoidentyfikacji informatyków w ramach własnej grupy zawodowej i ukazuje niejednoznaczność pojęcia "informatyk" w systemie znaczeń respondentów, a także nieprzystawalność potocznego ujęcia zakresu znaczeniowego tego terminu do jego szczegółowo dookreślonego zakresu widzianego z perspektywy wewnętrznej samych profesjonalistów.
