The article is a critical review of the book Conrad a Polska comprising analyses devoted to Conrad's Polish heritage by academics of various nationalities. The author emphasises the fact that a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives and research points of view from which the writer's biography and work are shown allows the refreshing of Conrad's portrayal as a man torn between various identities and worlds. In her opinion, the Polish reader can also be interested in using the Conradian prism for showing the particular characteristics of the external reception of our culture, emphasising those of its features and elements which form the image of Polishness abroad.

The article proposes a new reading of Hanna Malewska’s novel, which accounts for the text’s non-classical historiography approaches. Particularisation of its cognitive assumptions is supported by the concept of a trace-document which, as opposed to traditionally conceived source, is not a ready-made account of the past but its remains isolated through deprivation of the original context. The category of trace, related to the biographical and literary documents used in the piece of writing, becomes a manifestation of “weak” knowledge receiving support in the artist’s imagination. Accepting this assumption allows for discerning in Zniwo na sierpie not Malewska’s creativity’s “cul-de-sac” (which was the case to date) but rather a starting point for her following novels linking in casual notes concrete historical experience with references to more general cultural patterns into which the picture of the world constructed with documents is embedded.

The article concerns a story, usually seen by Conrad scholars as a simple example of reference to Polish history and situated at two research levels, namely romantic and biographical. The aim of the article is to indicate the ambiguity of the two approaches, mainly due to majority of literary games depriving the piece of documentary text simplicity, and also the story’s background about patriotic dedication which adds new cultural and political references to the text.

The article is an analysis of an anthology of medieval sources, unpublished to date, prepared by Hanna Malewska. Its comparison, firstly with the writer’s another source study “Listy staropolskie z epoki Wazów” (“Old Polish Letters from the Epoch of the House of Vasa”), then with her two novels “Kamienie wołać będą” (“Stones Would Cry Out”) and “Przemija postać świata” (“Fashion of this World Passeth Away”) allows to capture the most crucial traits of Middle Ages seen in the anthology in question through the prism of 12th and 13th c. aesthetic and philosophical assumptions. The selection of texts, in spite of their thematic diversity, is to lead to a higher level synthesis of the epoch, available by means of a reference to the motif of cathedral as to society and world model.

The article, being part of the debate on cognitive assumptions of the nonfiction literature is a polemic with the theses of Paweł Zajas’s work Jak świat prawdziwy stał się bajką: O literaturze niefikcjonalnej. (How the real world has become a fable. On nonfiction literature), questioning, in reference to Lejeune’s referential pact, the epistemological dimension of a part of modern reportage literature.

The article discusses Piotr Kurpiewski’s book Historia na ekranie Polski Ludowej [History on the screenof Polish People’s Republic]. Kurpiewski uses the concept of the politics of history to show the relationship between Polish postwar films and their political context. He examines the production process of individual films from the moment of their making to the moment(s) of their reception. From this point of view the historical film becomes one of the main ideological instruments, serving to legitimize the then sociopolitical regime.

The paper presents the evolution of the way of perceiving Russia in four works constituting M. Wilk’s northern cycle, which is the mostinteresting description of Russian experience in Polish literature in the recent years. The most important change is the transition from theassumptions regarding the North as the “essence of Russianness” to ethnographic-historical search revealing the presence of the peoples frombefore the Russian colonization on this land. In the effect of the discomfort felt by the writer as a result of the clash of the communist accumulations of idealized “Russianness” and everyday experiencing it the thematic shifts towards “exploring own soul” and towards the process of the initiation into the spiritual reality of the North are becoming more and more expressive i in the last volumes of the diar.

The article focuses on the analysis and interpretation of a short story by Guy de Maupassant, entitled The Necklace. The description of the assumptions related to the structure and the plot of this literary work was combined with a depiction of its psychological and philosophical contexts (Bovarysme, Schopenhauerism). Two plot layers were distinguished within the work. Onto a realistic background, the author applied an innuendo to the fairy tale about Cinderella in order to demonstrate the discrepancy between reality and daydreams. The reference to the tale as moralistic preaching on a potential turn of fate for the better became, within “the real story”, a tale on the price Cinderella pays for the possibility to go to the ball.
