The basis for this essay is the reconstruction of meaning of the spider’s metaphorical image. The spider in the 19th century has become a word-signal evoking the melancholic worldview. The early works of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski are interpreted here as a testimony to his fascination focused on German fantastic literature (including the prose of E.T.A. Hoffman ), in which this motif is also employed. The suggested interpretation of the lesser known works of "An Ancient Tale’"s author is an attempt at reconstructing the creative imagination of Kraszewski, in which the image of a spider in a web, as a symbol of a person drawing from within, are associated with the comfort the writer finds in the creative process while constantly struggling with the sorrow for the past and the feeling of loss.

Recenzja stanowi omówienie włoskiego przekładu powieści „Malwina, czyli Domyślność serca” (1816) Marii Wirtemberskiej. Autor przekładu i wstępu, wybitny polonista i slawista, Luigi Marinelli przedstawia włoskiemu czytelnikowi „Malwinę” jako nowoczesną powieść psychologiczną. Starannie wydana książka wraz z błyskotliwym wstępem jest udaną próbą przywrócenia miejsca tej polskiej powieści sentymentalnej w kanonie literatury europejskiej, z którego autorka czerpała inspiracje u progu XIX wieku, tworząc swoje dzieło w ścisłej relacji z literacką tradycją świata zachodniego i wschodniego.

The review is a discussion on the Italian translation of Maria Wirtemberska’s book entitled „Malvina, or the Heart’s Intuition” (1816). The author of the translation and of the introduction, an outstanding Polish and Slavic philologist, Luigi Marinelli, introduced Malvina to Italian readers as a modern psychological novel. The carefully published book with a brilliant foreword is a successful attempt to bring the Polish sentimental novel back to the canon of European literature, from which Wirtemberska drew her inspiration at the beginning of the 19th century, creating her work in close connection with the literary tradition of the Western and Eastern world.
