In December 1975, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and his advisor Helmut Sonnenfeldt met in London with U.S. ambassadors in European countries. The meeting dedicated to American foreign policy in Europe was secret, but information leaked to the press gave rise to the notion of the “Sonnenfeldt Doctrine,” triggering an international debate on U.S. policy towards the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Media speculation about the “doctrine” put the authorities in Warsaw in an awkward position, resulting in denials that the State Department considered Eastern Europe a Soviet sphere of influence.

The Katyn Massacre has played an important role in Polish-British relations during World War II and in the postwar decades. The first part of the article elaborates on the UK’s activity during and directly after WWII, while part two provides information about the 1950s that shows the UK’s position on the so-called Madden Committee established by the U.S. Congress to clarify the circumstances of the Katyn crime. The final part is devoted to the Foreign Office’s approach to plans to erect a monument commemorating the victims in London.

Since 2005, the Polish Institute of International Affairs has been publishing source documents on the history of Polish foreign policy from 1918 to 1989 in successive volumes of the series Polskie Dokumenty Dyplomatyczne (Polish Diplomatic Documents, PDD). The article sums up the 20 volumes brought out over the past 10 years, outlining the experience gained by editors of the series in the course of researching the archives, selecting documents for publication and completing the lengthy and complicated editorial process.
