Elena Romanicheva’s article is dedicated to one of the most actual problems of the methodics of the teaching, that is, to the understanding of the meaning of an artistic text by a bilingual pupil. The author highlights the main stages of the artistic comprehension and understanding of the text and describes the methodics of work with the word at the pre-textual (precommunicative) stage. The author also offers a well-founded system of questions and tasks helping a bilingual pupil to determine the general lexical meaning of the word and the exact actual shade of meaning used in the text. This will help him to understand the generation of an artistic image in an object of art created in a different language. The author consistently shows how the offered tasks and exercises helping to pass from understanding of a meaning of a word to understanding of a text in general in accordance with the conception of studying the Russian language which is metaphorically described by E. Passov as “culture through language and language through culture”. They help to comprehend the facts of culture whilst using the language as a mean of communication as well as to master the language as a mean of communication whilst comprehending the facts of culture.
