In the former classifications of compliment responses next to acceptance and rejection of a compliment there appears a special group of responses, also known as the self-praise avoidance mechanism (Pomerantz 1978), deflect/evade (Holmes 1988), deflating, deflecting, rejecting (Herbert/Straight 1989) or amendment strategies (Yu 2003). The last one of the above-mentioned groups combines the elements of acceptance and rejection and serves to restore the balance in a conversation and to save the face of the complimenter and of the complimented person. The analysis focuses on the last-mentioned group of responses. The main aim of this article is to show some chosen examples of the strategies used by Polish and German male and female students. The differences related to the culture and sex of the surveyed students will be discussed.

Strategie unikania chwalenia się w reakcjach studentek i studentów na komplementy. Porównanie polsko‑niemieckie W dotychczasowych klasyfikacjach reakcji na komplementy obok akceptacji i odrzucenia komplementu pojawia się grupa reakcji określana mianem self-praise avoidance mechanism (Pomerantz 1978), deflect/evade (Holmes 1988), deflating, deflecting, rejecting (Herbert/Straight 1989) czy też amendment strategies (Yu 2003). Te ostatnie łączą w sobie elementy akceptacji oraz odrzucenia komplementu i służą m.in. do przywrócenia równowagi podczas rozmowy i dbania o twarz osoby komplementującej jak i osoby komplementowanej. W niniejszym artykule poddano analizie wybrane strategie tej grupy reakcji studentek i studentów z Polski oraz Niemiec. Uwzględniono przy tym różnice uwarunkowane kulturą oraz płcią.

This article presents the complimenting behaviour of German and Polish students: strategies they use when respoding to compliments. The speech act was also analysed as regards the concept of face and positive and negative politeness. A corpus of 345 German and Polish compliment responses was examinated. The results show the existence of cross-cultural differences as well as similarities between the two groups of students. The article presents parts of author’s Master’s Thesis.

The growing interest in politeness phenomena clearly points to the importance of the issue in our life. Living with other people, one should consider other peoples’ feelings and needs in order to be polite. Politeness is inevitably reflected in language and differs cross-culturally. It is common that certain forms of behavior are acceptable and appropriate in one culture, but not successful in the other one. The aim of this article is to present the concept of politeness on the basis of how Polish and German students respond to compliments. Such knowledge promotes harmonious intercultural relations.

Gesten spielen eine überaus große Rolle in unserem Alltag. Der vorliegende Beitrag zielt darauf ab, die Analyseergebnisse der emblematischen Geste Sieg zu präsentieren, die von der an der deutsch-polnischen Grenze, genauer in Słubice und Frankfurt an der Oder, lebenden Jugend ausgeführt wurden. Es kann vermutet werden, dass bestimmte kulturbedingte Unterschiede in der Realisierung dieser Geste auftreten können. Außerdem liefern die Daten auch Informationen über die Formen der Geste im Rahmen der Kultur. Die Analyse basiert auf den Daten, die im Rahmen des Projekts Borderland gewonnen wurden, welches 2014-2016 durchgeführt und von Prof. Maciej Karpiński geleitet wurde.

Wraz ze zwiększającą się liczbą osób poszukujących swojego życiowego partnera w internecie, rośnie również zainteresowanie językoznawców zachowaniami użytkowników portali randkowych. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę analizy sposobu nawiązywania kontaktów międzyludzkich w tym kontekście ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem komplementów w tekstach inicjujących kontakty na znanym w Polsce portalu sympatia.onet.pl. Spośród 100 wiadomości przesłanych przez Polaków do użytkowniczki tegoż portalu analizie poddano te, w których pojawiły się komplementy, dzięki czemu możliwa była ich charakterystyka, m.in. pod kątem tzw. focus w odniesieniu do HERBERTA (1990). Poza tym omówiona została struktura morfologiczno-składniowa komplementów, środki leksykalne oraz komplementowane obiekty.

Alongside the increasing number of people looking for their life partners on the Internet, there is also a significant growth of interest among linguists regarding the behavior of dating website users. The main aim of this article is to analyze the ways that people make contact in this specific context. The key issue addressed by the author in her article, is to study the use of compliments in first contact messages sent by users of a well-known Polish dating website sympatia.onet.pl. The analysis has covered 17% of 100 messages from Polish male users to female users of the website, i.e. such messages that contained compliments. The characteristics of morphological, syntactic, lexical structure (especially the focus (HERBERT 1990) in the compliments) and the objects of compliments, is the subject of the analysis, based on examples found in this study.

Angesichts der steigenden Zahl an Menschen, die im Internet nach einem Partner bzw. einer Partnerin suchen, wächst auch in der Sprachwissenschaft das Interesse am Verhalten der Userinnen und User auf Dating-Portalen. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird der Versuch unternommen, die Aufnahme zwischenmenschlicher Kontakte in diesem Kontext zu analysieren, wobei ein besonderes Augenmerk den Komplimenten in Erstkontaktversuchen auf dem in Polen sehr bekannten Portal sympatia.onet.pl gilt. Einhundert von Polen an eine Userin geschickte Erstnachrichten werden einer Analyse unterzogen, in denen Komplimente zu finden sind, wodurch ihre Charakteristik u. a. in Bezug auf die Fokustypen von HERBERT (1990) entstehen kann. Besprochen werden ferner ihre morphosyntaktische Struktur sowie lexikalische Einheiten und Komplimentobjekte.
