The article deals with the issue of immigrants' assimilation into an urban space which is for them at once alien and their own. Stefania Kossowska's collection of essays from London allows just such a look at the so-called Polish London. It also allows an initiation of a discussion of numerous important issues related to the interaction between the city, history, and cultures of its inhabitants

BODY AND LAUGHTER IN GABRIELA ZAPOLSKA’S MORALNOŚĆ PANI DULSKIEJ /THE MORALITY OF MRS. DULSKA/ AND POLISH GENDER STEREOTYPES  Gabriela Zapolska’s play Moralność pani Dulskiej (1906, The Morality of Mrs. Dulska) is undoubtedly one of her best works and one of the best comedies written in Polish. Its interest lies in the way in which the author satirizes moral philistinism by reversing gender roles in a middle class family. The presentation shows how gender related issues are used in the play to underscore the point that philistine morality is not gender specific, and it analyzes the way in which comic effects are achieved against conventional stereotypes. It then compares the text of the play with two more recent performances, both TV fi lms (one by Andrzej Wajda, and the other by Tomasz Zygadło), in which Zapolska’s originality becomes re-conventionalized in accordance with patriarchal stereotypes. In both instances patriarchal gender expectations are reintroduced and reinforced, but with the loss of the humour of the play in Wajda’s production, and a shift to the more traditional, anti-feminine comedy in Zygadło’s version.

Focusing on omissions and erasures, the author discusses the Benedict Anderson's idea of nation as an imagined community in the context of history of Poland and its Eastern neighbors. Many critics argue that common memory, which constitutes an imagined community, comprises historical facts, stories and narrations. However, members of this community share also a tendency to remove or omit the same facts, stories and narrations - thus the community is formed by both common memory and common forgetting. Two historical plays by Marian Pankowski - Śmierć białej pończochy and Zygmunt August - provide the author of this text with examples that help to discuss the omissions and erasures which are specific for the Polish culture.

The article Body and Gender in Nazi Concentration Camps is an attempt to discuss difficult issues of human sexuality and sexually marked behaviors in the context of the concentration camps, and their descriptions in the memoirs of the survivors. Using notions and concepts of the so called "black American feminism" the author (referring extensively to books by Stanisław Grzesiuk and Zofia Romanowiczowa) shows how in the concentration camp the human body became the only space of a relative privacy of the prisoner. At the same time the body becomes a territory on which all - both biological and socially constructed - human fates cross.

This article discusses the current situation of courses in Polish language and literature at North American universities. Diminishing interest in Polish culture, caused by a variety of factors, has resulted in limited offerings of courses on this subject. The common fusion of Slavic and German Departments in North America does not help to reverse this trend. In current years, however, there has been a growing interest in Polish-Jewish themes. This, in turn, might lead to a renewed interest in Polish courses; for instance, the Polish language can be taught not simply with heritage students in mind but also as an important language for reading Holocaust testimonies.

Nadieżda Durowa i początki rosyjskiej autobiografii

100%
PL

This text presents Nadezhda Durova, the author of the first Russian autobiography, who, in male clothing, spent nine years as an officer in the Russian army. The special interest is paid to the introductory part in which Durova returns, after many years, to her diary notes from the period of the Napoleonic campaign, adding in a description of her own childhood. Apart from the commotion of the transgender theme, raised relatively often in relation to Durova, this description allows for a view into the world of women in Russia and Ukraine at the beginning of the 19th century, as well as a preliminary mapping of the differences between female figures in the masterpieces of the Russian literary canon (as written by men) and a personal narration, based on experiences in a woman’s world.

Artykuł jest próbą analizy przydatności w najnowszych badaniach nad Zagładą i Holocaustem robiącego dzisiaj dużą karierę w naukach społecznych pojęcia bystander.

The article is an attempt at an analysis of usefulness of the concept of “bystander” that is increasingly popular in social sciences, in modern studies of Shoah and Holocaust. The author points to objective terminological dependencies, but she also takes into consideration the differences in the historical and cultural experience that require different perceptions of the role of witnesses in the English language discourse and in the East European, and especially Polish perspective.
