There are several controversial points in the presented theory. First, the "agent-recipient" dichotomy seems contaminated by other dichotomies ("recipient" requires a counterpart in a "giver", while the opposition of "agent" is a neutral "observer" rather than the involved "recipient"). Second, doubts have been raised concerning the asserted low diagnosticity of moral acts for self-esteem. In the commentary, I presented my own perspective on this issue. Third, contrary to what the authors claim, the agent-recipient dimension does not seem to be the same as other dimensions mentioned in the paper (e.g., individualism-collectivism), and it corresponds to one pole rather than to a whole dimension.

The editorial is an introduction to five papers devoted to the "psychology of capitals". Briefly described were the concepts of human, cultural, and social capital, the major theoretical controversies and conceptual confusions in this field, as well as selected research themes undertaken by Polish social psychologists. In the finał section, authors of the papers and their main points were briefly presented.

Three claims are presented and argued for: (1) that universal laws are impossible within constructivistic (humanistic) approaches since the very nature of humanistic explanations (intentional, teleological) precludes possibilities of objective comparisons between investigated targets, (2) that it is unproductive to look for universal attributes of study objects (e.g., attributes common to all people and cultures) since differences seem to be the rule rather than exception in the social sciences, (3) that it is possible to speak of universal mechanisms if one assumes that the formulated laws have an interactive nature and that one of the factors (the independent variable) is a theoretically meaningful dimension that differentiates the compared people or cultures.

The discussion initiated by Tomasz Witkowski and Pawel Fortuna in the key article “On psycho-business, tolerance and responsibility or strategies employed by pure scientists” gathered 14 discussants, both academic psychologists and psychologists interested in practical applications of knowledge. In this paper, which serves as an introduction to the whole discussion, we attempt to identify the main issues brought up by the discussants. They include: (a) diagnosis of the market of psychological services, (b) causes and mechanisms of pseudo-science and of proliferation of the pseudo-psychological business, (c) relationships between academic and applied psychology, (d) methods of counteracting pseudo-science and pseudo-psychological business. In conclusion we encourage representatives of the psychological community in Poland to enter more willingly into the substantially sound discussions concerning the meeting of academic knowledge and psychological practice.
