Italian cradle of chance calculus

Traditionally, the history of probability theory is dated for the year 1654, when a gambler de Méré proposed to Pascal two problems to solve. The problems were solved independently by B. Pascal and P. Fermat. One rather ignores that similar problems had been discussed and solved two hundred years earlier by Italian mathematicians. The article presents a sketch of the history of pre-Pascalian period of development of the doctrine of chances.

Gospodarka ludzka będąca jedną z najważniejszych instytucji społecznych stanowi tylko część gospodarki przyrodniczej. Arystotelesowskie rozumienie gospodarki jako systemu czynności zapewniających dobre życie członkom domostwa rodzinnego już w XVII wieku zostało metaforycznie rozszerzone na mikrokosmos (pojedyncze zwierzę) i na makrokosmos (cała przyroda, całe środowisko naturalne). Niezależnie od takiego jednolitego, organicystycznego ujęcia wiedza naukowa o trzech podstawowych systemach (gospodarka, społeczeństwo i środowisko naturalne) formułowana jest przy użyciu bardzo różnych pojęć. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest prezentacja sposobu i korzyści ujmowania całości procesów produkcyjnych z wykorzystaniem biologicznych pojęć metabolizmu, które w przypadku systemów społecznych nazywa się metabolizmem społecznym lub gospodarczym.

W artykule tym przedstawiony jest krótki rys historyczny rozwoju statystyki. W szczególności wyjaśniony jest rodowód słowa statystyka. Na tle ogólnego rozwoju przedstawione zostały warunki społeczno-polityczne w jakich powstawała statystyka polska. Pobieżnie omówiono prace dotyczące statystyki, jakie ukazały się w zwartej postaci w XIX wieku. Organizacja statystyki publicznej i literatura na ten temat, jako osobna problematyka, w artykule tym nie jest omawiana. Dokonano zaś krótkiej analizy krytycznej istniejącego polskiego piśmiennictwa na temat rozwoju myśli statystycznej w Polsce.

This paper presents a short overview of the history of statistics in Poland. The most significant books published during XIX century are briefly described. Organization and publications concerning the official statistics are beyond the scope of this paper. A critical description of the existing polish literature concerning the history of statistics is also included into this paper.

On the 8th of November 2013 the Senate of the Wrocław University of Economics gathered for a special meeting. The academic community was commemorating Professor Zdzisław Hellwig – one of the greatest Polish experts in the fields of statistics and econometrics, as well as a man of brilliant mind and kind heart, and an excellent teacher. Profssor Hellwig’s brief biography was presented by Prof. Andrzej Gospodarowicz, Rector of the University of Economics. Speeches followed, delivered by friends, students, and co-workers of Professor Hellwig: Prof. Stanisław Bartosiewicz, Prof. Maria Cieślak, Prof. Walenty Ostasiewicz, Prof. Jerzy Korczak, Prof. Czesław Domański (from Łódź University), Prof. Andrzej Barczak (from Katowice University of Economics). Letters of condolence were read aloud.
