Społeczeństwo informacyjne jest stosunkowo nową formą społeczną, która rozwija się wraz ze stale rosnącym dostępem do informacji i stale rosnącym jej znaczeniem w społeczeństwie. Równocześnie z próbami zdefiniowania czym jest ten nowy rodzaj formy społecznej pojawiły się próby wyodrębnienia jego najważniejszych cech i funkcji, jakie ono spełnia we współczesnych gospodarkach. Wśród badaczy tego zjawiska nie ma zgody zarówno co do samej jego definicji, jak i do najważniejszych właściwości oraz zadań, które przed nim stawia obecna cywilizacja.

Information society is a relatively new social form which is developing along with constantly increasing access to information and its still growing importance in the society. Along with trials to define what this new type of social form is, there have appeared trials to distinguish its most important features and functions, which it fulfils in modern economies. There is no agreement among scientists working on this phenomenon as to its definition as well as the most important properties and tasks which it faces in a current civilization.
