The article contains a theoretical reflection on the genesis of onomastics as a scientific discipline, its development, and its current state. The author analyzes and comments on the most important intellectual paradigms, methodologies, and classification criteria in force at the beginnings of study on personal names (the first half of the 19th century) as well their variability, which arises from changeable research positions. It also points out the most important thematic fields that have been worked out by onomasts or that need to be worked out. In his opinion - due the development of a general theory of proper names - onomastics today possesses the status of an independent scientific discipline within linguistics.

The author has ventured to characterize that which is most fundamental in Polish onomastics. This is his subjective view, although it is to a significant extent the result of discussion with many other onomasticians (including non-Poles). He encountered Polish onomastics in 1959, when he received the first letter from Henryk Borek with specialized information. From that time he 'grew into' into Polish onomastics, and academic contacts transformed into lasting friendship. He can say that a Polish 'national' onomastics exists and has many characteristic traits, and the results of its research contributes to the development not only of Polish onomastics but also that of the world. He would like to devote a few words to organizational aspects of Polish onomastics, which provide an unparalleled model for many countries. Onomastics is a constituent part of university programs. The number of people engaged in onomastics is impressive. Systematic and thematically defined conferences take place; the number of publications is unrivalled by other Slavic countries (compare, for instance, the publication of the Slavic onomastic encyclopedia). The publication 'Onomastica' is among the world's best periodicals and plays a uniting role in Slavistics.
