The author of the article poses a question concerning adequacy of research proposals inspired by the circle called ‘the ethic of reading’ and ‘theological return’. She points out to the fact that questions concerning axiology of reading, that have been recently considered old- fashioned, are the classical problems of humanistics today. It results from the notion of interference between different disciplines, but above all from the fact that ethical response to the work of literature is an integral element of individual reading. Ethics appears in read-ers mind before poetics. It makes possible uniting a reader (that has been wrongly divided into an emotional and a suspicious kind) into one subject of multiple reading experience. Powerful institutions of a text are based after all on individual reading of a subject that ex-periences, understands and evaluates the text.

The article discusses the contemporary status of reading in the context of theory and practice of reading. Understanding the concept of reading is between being (a textual object) and being (reading subject). The internal dynamics of this category is due to the interpretation of different or even conflicting content and quality that it describes. We call the “reading” the affective-intellectual activity of the reading individual; cultural practice contained in reading but not identical with it; saved text as an object that exists regardless of its receipt; and finally a list of texts that must be known by an educational institution, social or environmental group.

In her article the author discusses some consequences of silent reading, which became a norm in the Western culture in the 10th century. The experience of reading is difficult to present, hence the reading scenes are presented with the use of a figure of mediation – a practice visible in the analysed texts and photographs. Typical forms of mediation include traditional stylisic devices: metaphor, metonymy and irony. Thanks to them we get closer to the intimate experience of someone else’s reading, nevertheless they confirm the inaccessibility of that experience to the observer.

The article discusses the situation of the sick, who is excluded from the community of the healthy people. The author describes the way, in which the literature helps to abolish the border between the sick and the healthy. Philoctetes by Sophocles is the subject of the analysis. The study of the main character allows the reader to understand the situation of the sick person, as well as the mechanisms of the exclusion and the inability to forgive.
