The article addresses a number of cognitive issues: Do maps serve only as neutral windows that document the world cartographically? How often do maps provide somethingmore, for instance an axiological perspective or a certain emotional filter? In the article the overview of selected thematic maps from Atlas of Poland’s political geography is preceded by a passage dedicated to human emotionality. Later, once the basic information about cartography (cartographic mapping, generalization, etc.) has been outlined, the article characterizes several maps and the methods of cartographic presentation and formulates the essential message of each map. Finally, the most common techniques of map emotionalization are enumerated. The standard graphic-verbal representation of a map shows in a way which is to be objective, conventional, simplifying and generalizing the approximate truth (probability) about space. Emotions present on the map merely imply intentions, because maps, which usually speak objectively about a specific spatial history, retain some cognitive-affective charge. A lesson on cartography says, among other things, that objectivism is sometimes a fertile soil for emotions.

It proposes an interpretative matrix in the formula of seven passages: (1) following urban morality, (2) following urban senses, feelings and emotions, (3) following authenticity, (4) in search of the city as a metaphor, (5) following urban diagnoses and findings, (6) towards the space of imagination, (7) on the route of urban idioms.

This analysis points towards some classic interpretative tropes of the urbanised environment (e.g. spatial organisation and layout of a city, patterns of urban development, qualitative/spatial/operational attributes of urban space, morphogenesis of settlement units), developed by various scientific fields, such as history, urban planning, architecture, urban sociology, urban geography, and culture studies. It also outlines in short some derivative aspects of the urban discourse analysis (like phenomenological trail, public discourse, social-life perspective, or spatial reason of urban state). But the culmination of this study is a review of ten urban geosemiotic measures, namely: context, type, organisational, permanence, transparency, openness, discretion, straightness, originality, and environmental. Each of them is illustrated adequately by real examples from all over the world, often with a historical scope. The main purpose of this research is quite clear: to broaden the reflection on urban space within a physiognomic (morphological), semiotic as well as phenomenological context.

W artykule zasygnalizowano niektóre klasyczne tropy badawcze środowiska zurbanizowanego, wypracowane przez wybrane dziedziny nauki, a mianowicie: historię miast (analiza układu przestrzennego), urbanistykę i architekturę (analiza struktury i tekstury miejskiej), socjologię przestrzeni (analiza miasta jako miejsca zamieszkanego przez ludzi), geografię miast (analiza wielowymiarowej organizacji przestrzennej), wreszcie poprzez perspektywę kulturoznawczą (analiza tekstu miasta jako komunikatu). Następnie pokrótce zarysowano pochodne aspekty analizy dyskursu miejskiego, rozpięte oscylacyjnie: między semantyką a syntaktyką (trop fenomenologiczny), między aksjomatem a idiomem (dyskurs publiczny), między strategią a taktyką (wymiar społeczny), w końcu między geometrią a ruchem (konstytucja miejska). Zwieńczeniem opracowania jest zaś przegląd – autorskich bądź autorsko sprowadzonych do dyskursu miejskiego – dziesięciu współczynników geosemiotycznych (traktowanych jednak nie stricte matematycznie, lecz jako możliwe sposoby jakościowo-ilościowego badania tkanki zurbanizowanej) z perspektywy przestrzenno-fizjonomicznej, czyli: współczynnika kontekstu, typu, zorganizowania, stałości, przejrzystości, otwartości, dyskretności, prostości, oryginalności oraz przyrodniczości.

The article is a problem-oriented identification of some aspects of tourism in Warsaw, both typical (hotels, restaurants, markets, museums) and unusual (taxi drivers, the right side of the city, lights). However, the authors discuss only some issues related to tourism in Warsaw. In addition, the article tries to show that the capital of Poland – due to various aspects, but mainly because of its rich and dramatic history – is a city with a huge and diverse tourist potential. Despite the efforts of entities involved in the tourism sector, it is a collection of separate elements, rather than a unified whole.

Artykuł jest problemowym ujęciem wybranych aspektów turystyki w Warszawie – zarówno tych oczywistych (np. hotele, gastronomia, muzea ), jak i nieoczywistych ( np. dorożkarz, prawa strona miasta, światło ). Moduły, uporządkowane w kolejności alfabetycznej, sygnalizują jedynie pewne zagadnienia związane z turystyką warszawską, która nadal (mimo starań m.in. władz miasta, ekspertów, zarządzających sektorem turystycznym czy akademików) przypomina – w tym mieście Fryderyka Chopina – raczej zbiór osobnych jego scherz aniżeli spójny koncert symfoniczny. Stąd też różne paradygmaty stanowiące kanwę rozważań.

International relations of the Warsaw Metropolitan Area are presented in the paper. International relations, their extent (number and rangę), character and intensity reflect on the degree to which the metropolitan area (the central city and the remaining component units) has been included into an economic and socio-political relations network. Research was carried out, taking advantage of a broad base of available information sources, generał economic, cultural, scientific, transport, tourist relations as well as cooperation of international self-government units.
