The study investigates the role of temperament in posttraumatic growth among people who experienced a death of someone close. A group of 74 participants - mostly women (63.5%), aged 21 to 74 years (M=38.4; SD=15.5), who lost a parent, a child, a spouse or a partner, a sibling or a very close friend completed questionnaires measuring levels of posttraumatic growth (the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory) and temperamental traits (the Formal Characteristics of Behaviour - Temperament Inventory). Results revealed that increased appreciation of life and improved relations to others are the most prevalent areas of posttraumatic growth. Findings suggest that such temperamental traits, as emotional reactivity, and to a lesser extent briskness and endurance play significant role in posttraumatic growth.

Experiencing traumatic events and posttraumatic growth in youthThe study explored the experience of traumatic events and posttraumatic in youtch positive changes resulting from struggling with a trauma, and the relationship between sex, age, the kind of traumatic event and time elapsed since the event and subsequent changes occured. 165 adolescents (52% girls, 48% boys) aged 14–18 participated in the study. The Polish adaptation of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory was used. 72% of adolescents experienced some traumatic event. The most frequent were: loss of a loved person (33%), chronic or acute illness, accident and injury, fi nancial hardship (13,3% each) and parent’s divorce (9,9%). 58% the of examined adolescents revealed at least on average level of posttraumatic growth. Positive changes were higher in self-perception, relating to others, appreciation of life than in the spiritual area. Sex, age, the type of experienced trauma and time elapsed since the event occurred did not relate to the level of posttraumatic growth in the examined group of youth.

Article presents development of the design method to measure personal growth in children and youth, as a result of struggling with negative life events. The Personal Growth Questionnaire was developed in two versions – as a self-rating instrument – KOW-27 – D/M, in which child himself/herself assess perceived changes and in version for parents – KOW-27 – R/O, who evaluate changes of their child. The Personal Growth Questionnaire (both versions) consists of three parts: A, B and C. In the first one the examined person chooses from the list of 16 events the most negative situation, which he/she has experienced. In part B – indicates time lapsed since event occurred, and then (part C) using 4-point-rating scale (from 0 – I did not experience this change to 3 – I experienced this change to a great degree) indicates the level of changes perceived as a results of the experienced situation. The reliability of the questionnaire is high (Cronbach’s alpha in version of self-evaluation is 0,94, in version for parents – 0,97).

Wstęp: Celem podjętych badań było ustalenie roli zasobów osobistych (duchowość) i społecznych (wsparcie społeczne w pracy) w pojawianiu się negatywnych (objawy zespołu stresu pourazowego, post-traumatic stress disorder - PTSD) i pozytywnych (potraumatyczny wzrost) skutków doświadczeń traumatycznych w grupie pracowników służb ratowniczych. Materiał i metody: Analizie poddano wyniki badań 116 pracowników reprezentujących służby ratownicze, tj. strażaków (37,1%), policjantów (37,1%) i ratowników medycznych (25,8%), którzy doświadczyli zdarzenia traumatycznego w związku z wykonywaną pracą. Wiek badanych wynosił 21-57 lat (M = 35,27; SD = 8,13). Do oceny skutków doświadczanych zdarzeń wykorzystano polskie wersje Impact of Events Scale-R oraz Post-traumatic Growth Inventory. Duchowość oceniano za pomocą Kwestionariusza Samoopisu, przeznaczonego do pomiaru duchowości, a wsparcie społeczne w pracy mierzono skalą „Na jakie wsparcie możesz liczyć". Background: The purpose of the research is to investigate the role of personal (spirituality) and social (social support in the workplace) resources in both negative (post-traumatic stress disorder - PTSD symptoms) and positive (post-traumatic growth) effects of experienced trauma in a group of emergency service workers. Materials and Methods: Data of 116 workers representing emergency service (37.1% firefighters, 37.1%, police officers and 25.8% medical rescue workers) who have experienced traumatic events in their worksite were analyzed. The range of age of the participants was 21-57 years (M = 35.27; SD = 8.13). Polish versions of the Impact of Events Scale - Revised and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory were used to assess the negative and positive effects of experienced events. Spirituality was assessed by self-report questionnaire and social support in the workplace scale was measured by the scale What support you can count on. Results: The results revealed that support from supervisors reduces the severity of PTSD symptoms, and spirituality and support from co-workers promote the growth after trauma. Conclusions: Personal resources in the form of spirituality, compared with the social resources, play more important role in gaining benefits from trauma than in protecting against the harmful effects of the experienced traumatic event. Background The purpose of the research was to investigate the role of personal resources, such as optimism and sense of selfefficacy in both negative (posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms) and positive (posttraumatic growth – PTG) effects of experienced trauma in a group of emergency service representatives. Material and Methods Data of 100 medical rescue workers, mostly men (59%) who have experienced traumatic events in their worksite were analyzed. The age of the participants ranged from 24 to 60 years (mean = 37.43; standard deviation = 8.73). Polish versions of the Impact of Event Scale – Revised and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory were used to assess the negative and positive effects of experienced events. Optimism was assessed by the Life Orientation Test and sense of self-efficacy by the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale. Results The obtained results revealed that optimism is negatively associated with symptoms of PTSD in men, and sense of self-efficacy – positively with the severity of growth after trauma in women. Conclusions The analyzed personal resources play a diverse role in the emergence of negative and positive effects of experienced traumatic events, depending on the gender of the respondents. Wstęp Celem podjętych badań było ustalenie roli zasobów osobistych, takich jak optymizm i poczucie własnej skuteczności, w występowaniu negatywnych (objawy stresu pourazowego (posttraumatic stress disorder – PTSD)) i pozytywnych (potraumatyczny wzrost (posttraumatic growth – PTG)) skutków doświadczeń traumatycznych wśród przedstawicieli służb ratowniczych. Materiał i metody Analizie poddano wyniki 100 ratowników medycznych (59% mężczyzn), którzy doświadczyli zdarzeń traumatycznych w związku z wykonywaną pracą. Wiek badanych wynosił 24–60 lat (średnia = 37,43; odchylenie standardowe = 8,73). Do oceny negatywnych skutków doświadczanych zdarzeń wykorzystano Skalę Wpływu Zdarzeń, a pozytywnych – Inwentarz Potraumatycznego Rozwoju. Med. Aim. The aim of the undertaken research was to determine the severity of secondary traumatic stress and secondary posttraumatic growth and their links with workload among nurses exposed to secondary trauma. Study group and methods. The analysis included the results obtained from 281 nurses exposed to secondary trauma. The age of the respondents ranged from 20 to 65 years (M = 42.62, SD = 11.43). The study used a survey, as well as the Secondary Traumatic Stress Inventory and the Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Results. The obtained results indicated a high intensity of secondary traumatic stress and a moderate intensity of secondary growth after trauma in the studied group of nurses. Among the three workload indices included, the number of working hours per week devoted to helping patients is significantly associated with secondary stress – negatively and secondary growth – positively, also acting as a predictor of these variables. Conclusions. A large number of hours of work with patients seems to play a role that protects nurses from the development of negative and favors the occurrence of positive consequences of secondary exposure to trauma.

Cel. Grupa badana i metody. Wnioski. Duża liczba godzin pracy z pacjentami zdaje się pełnić rolę chroniącą pielęgniarki przed rozwojem negatywnych i sprzyjać występowaniu pozytywnych konsekwencji wtórnej ekspozycji na traumę. Słowa kluczowe: ekspozycja na wtórną traumę, wtórny stres, wtórny wzrost, obciążenie pracą, pielęgniarki

Emergency service workers are exposed to experience traumatic events related to the nature of their work. The study aimed to identify the role of ruminations in occurrence of posttraumatic positive changes. The research was conducted in a group of 120 medical rescue workers, of whom 85 (55 men and 30 women) confirmed that they experienced at least one traumatic event in the context of their work in the last 5 years. The age of the participants ranged from 25 to 61 years (M = 38.07; SD = 9.61). Polish versions of standardized tools were used: the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory – PTGI and the Event Related Rumination Inventory – ERRI. The participants revealed a low level of posttraumatic growth and low intensity of ruminations, both intrusive and deliberate ones. Among the two types of the analyzed ruminations only deliberate ones proved to be a predictor of posttraumatic growth and all its factors. Deliberate ruminations play an essential role in the occurrence of positive outcomes of an experienced trauma.

Badaniami objęto 120 ratowników medycznych, spośród których 85 (55 mężczyzn i 30 kobiet) potwierdziło wystąpienie w ostatnich 5 latach przynajmniej jednego zdarzenia traumatycznego w związku z wykonywaną pracą. Wiek badanych mieścił się w granicach 25–61 lat (M = 38,07, SD = 9,61). W badaniach wykorzystano polskie wersje standaryzowanych narzędzi, tj.

Only recently the development and positive changes after trauma experiences, especially in children and adolescents, have become a subject of research, although the trauma itself and its negative impact on the human condition have been known and explored for a long time. The aim of this study was to determine associations between perceived parental attitudes and positive changes after a traumatic experience. The research group consisted of 72 young people (36 boys and 36 girls) aged 10–17 years who were victims of road accidents. The research tools were the Personal Growth Questionnaire – KOW-27 developed by N. Ogińska-Bulik and Parental Attitudes Scale – SPR, version for young people, by M. Plopa. The respondents have experienced positive changes as a result of a negative life situation. The results showed a signifi cant, though varying, role of parental attitudes, especially attitudes of mothers, that were correlated with personal growth. Their meaning is associated not so much with the general index of posttraumatic growth than with each of its dimensions.

Objectives Professionals helping victims of violence trauma, in addition to a number of negative effects, may also experience positive changes in the form of vicarious posttraumatic growth (VPTG). Cognitive trauma processing and empathy seem to be important to VPTG. The aim was to determine the relationship between empathy, cognitive trauma processing and VPTG in female professionals helping violence victims. Material and Methods The study included 154 women representing 3 professional groups (therapists, social workers, probation officers). The subjects’ age ranged 26–67 years (M±SD 43.98±10.83). The study used 3 standard measurement tools, i.e. the Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, the Empathic Sensitiveness Scale, measuring 3 aspects of empathy, i.e. empathic concern, personal distress and perspective taking, the Cognitive Processing of Trauma Scale, allowing assessment of 5 remedial strategies (positive cognitive restructuring, downward comparison, resolution/acceptance, denial, regret) and a survey developed for the use of the research. Results Positive correlations were found between empathy, cognitive coping strategies and VPTG. Positive cognitive restructuring and resolution/acceptance strategies were found to mediate the relationship between empathy and VPTG. Conclusions Professionals helping trauma victims may experience positive effects in the form of VPTG. The occurrence of VPTG in female professionals is enhanced by the use of empathy and positive coping strategies.

Background Emergency service workers are exposed to experienced traumatic events related to the nature of their work. The study aimed at identifying the role of cognitive processes, namely different forms of ruminations, as predictors of consequences of experienced trauma. Material and Methods The data on 120 medical rescuers (80 men, 40 women) who had experienced in their worksite at least 1 traumatic event in the last 5 years, were analyzed. The age of the participants ranged from 25 to 61 years (mean (M) = 38.07; standard deviation (SD) = 8.92). The following Polish versions of standardized tools were used: the Impact of Event Scale – Revised (IES-R), the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) and the Event Related Rumination Inventory (ERRI). Results The results of regression analyses indicated 2 significant predictors, intrusive rumination for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and deliberate rumination for posttraumatic growth (PTG). Conclusions Ruminations play an essential role in the occurrence of negative and positive outcomes of experienced trauma. The associations between PTSD and PTG, with different forms of ruminations, may be used in therapy, treating the appearance of intrusive rumination as an opportunity to turn towards active engagement in deliberate rumination, that facilitates the occurrence of posttraumatic growth. Materiał i metody Do udziału w badaniach zakwalifikowano 120 ratowników (80 mężczyzn, 40 kobiet), którzy w związku z pełnieniem obowiązków zawodowych potwierdzili wystąpienie w ostatnich 5 latach przynajmniej jednego zdarzenia traumatycznego. Wiek badanych wynosił 25–61 lat (średnia (mean – M) = 38,07, odchylenie standardowe (standard deviation – SD) = 8,92). W badaniach wykorzystano następujące polskie wersje standaryzowanych narzędzi: Zrewidowaną Skalę Wpływu Zdarzeń (Impact of Event Scale – Revised – IES-R), Inwentarz Potraumatycznego Rozwoju (Posttraumatic Growth Inventory – PTGI) oraz Inwentarz Ruminacji o Negatywnym Zdarzeniu (IRoNZ, Event Related Rumination Inventory – ERRI). Objectives The purpose of the research is to investigate the mediating role of coping strategies for stress in the relation between resiliency and post-traumatic growth in a group of paramedics. Material and Methods Data of 80 paramedics who have experienced traumatic event at their worksites was analyzed. The age range of the participants was 21–67 years old (mean: 35.47, standard deviation: 10.21). The Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, the Assessment Resiliency Scale and Inventory to Measure Coping Strategies for Stress – Mini-Cope were used in the study. Results Venting of negative emotions and denial appeared as suppressors in analyzing the relation, while planning plays mediating role between resiliency and post-traumatic growth. Conclusions In the process of post-traumatic growth, both avoidance and problem-focused strategies are important. Moreover, controlling such strategies as Venting and Denial may result in a high level of posttraumatic growth in the study group. The data supports that resiliency may have direct or indirect impact on post-traumatic changes. The results allow to understand the mechanisms of resiliency better, that relationship with post-traumatic growth is ambiguous.

Objectives: Medical providers working with trauma survivors are exposed to the negative and positive effects of secondary trauma, both of which are affected by social support and job satisfaction. The aim of this study was to determine the mediating role of job satisfaction in the relationship between social support and the negative and positive effects of secondary exposure to trauma among medical personnel. The negative indicator of such exposure was secondary traumatic stress (STS), while the positive indicator was secondary posttraumatic growth (SPTG). Material and Methods: The analyses included 419 medical providers working with trauma victims (201 paramedics and 218 nurses). Data was collected with the Secondary Traumatic Stress Inventory, Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Social Support Scale, Work Satisfaction Scale, and survey. Mediation analyses were applied to assess relationships between variables. Results: The mediation analyses indicated that job satisfaction mediates (mainly partly) the relationship between social support and STS and SPTG. This may indicate that both social support and job satisfaction act as significant predictors of the negative and positive effects of secondary exposure to trauma. Conclusions: As a friendly and mutually-supportive environment can increase job satisfaction, reducing the risk of secondary traumatic stress and promoting positive posttraumatic changes, it is important to increase social support and job satisfaction among medical providers exposed to secondary trauma.

Background Professionals working with trauma victims can experience both negative and positive effects following exposure to secondary trauma. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between secondary traumatic stress (STS), secondary posttraumatic growth (SPTG) and cognitive coping strategies and to establish the mediating role of cognitive coping strategies in the relationship between STS and SPTG. Material and Methods A group of 500 professionals working with trauma survivors were surveyed. The Secondary Traumatic Stress Inventory, the Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and the Cognitive Processing of Trauma Scale was used. Results The results indicated that 29% of professionals demonstrate a high intensity of STS, and nearly 34% exhibit a high level of SPTG. Denial and regret were positively correlated with STS; positive cognitive restructuring, resolution/acceptance and downward comparison were positively related to SPTG. Two cognitive coping strategies, i.e., positive cognitive restructuring and downward comparison, were found to act as mediators in the relationship between STS and SPTG. Conclusions Understanding the effects of secondary exposure to trauma and the coping responses of professionals working with trauma survivors will support the development of prevention and intervention actions aimed at protecting them from the deleterious impact of exposure to secondary trauma at work and promoting secondary posttraumatic growth.
