In 2013 the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany published a Companion Guide Zwischen Autonomie und Angewiesenheit. Familie als ver-lässliche Gemeinschaft stärken - Between autonomy and dependence – strengthening the family as a reliable community. The article presents the content of this Companion regarding families and the challenges they face, with special attention to theological analysis contained in the Companion. The article also presents the arguments for and against that have appeared in German public discussion in various milieus (academic theologians, politicians and social activists, media representatives, as well as state authorities and various church circles).

The article analyses the debate in the largest international organization of Lutheran Churches which takes place within the context of the 500th an-niversary of the Reformation that falls in 2017. Theological heritage of Mar-tin Luther is an important point of reference in areas such as herme¬neutics, ethics, political and social commitment, as well as work ethics, and economic life. Analysis of the Reformer’s theological thought in these areas is not only a reminder of key elements of his theology, but also an inspiring, critical actualisation of contemporary problems faced by the Lutheran Churches.

In the Lutheran symbolical books, there are two main threads concerning repentance. First of them is present mainly in “The Augsburg Confession”, its “Apology” and “The Smalcald Articles”, it is also confirmed in “The Formula of Concord”. It combines repentance with preaching the Law and Gospel. Preaching of the first leads to contrition, which, thanks to the preaching of the Gospel, is followed by faith. The second thread is present mainly in Luther’s Catechisms and “The Smalcald Articles”, as well as in “The Formula of Concord”. In it, repentance is considered to be an everyday actualisation of baptism in a believer’s daily life, in which the old, sinful Adam is removed and a new man comes into being. In both threads repentance is presented as the result of the Holy Spirit’s work in a man.

The article „Pre-Reformation theology of Jan Hus” presents, in its first part, life and work of Jan Hus, showing engagement of the Czech theologian in the Czech reformation-national movement of the 16th century. The second part focuses on presenting the content of Jan Hus’s most important theological work – the treaty De ecclesia – pointing, among others, to the use by him of the notion of church as a communion of the chosen and criticism of reducing the concept of church to its institutional form. The third part shows, how Jan Hus’s person and work were received by the Wittenberg Reformation, and especially by Martin Luther who, in his attitude towards the Czech reformer, underwent certain evolution from initial aversion to accepting the reformation movement as a continuation of the work started in Prague.

W artykule pt. „Problem pierwszego dopuszczenia do Wieczerzy Pańskiej w dyskusji na forum Światowej Federacji Luterańskiej z lat 1947-2010” omówiono dwa zasadnicze wątki dotyczące pierwszego dopuszczenia do Sakramentu Ołtarza. Chodzi o powiązanie tego aktu z konfirmacją oraz o wiek przystępujących po raz pierwszy do Stołu Pańskiego, także w przypadku, gdyby akt ten oddzielono od konfirmacji. Teologiczna argumentacja podnoszona w programach studyjnych dotyczących konfirmacji oraz nabożeństwa, odwołująca się głównie do ogólnych warunków dopuszczenia do Wieczerzy Pańskiej (przyjęcia chrztu i rozróżniania Ciała i Krwi Pańskiej), szła w kierunku postulatu rozłączenia konfirmacji i aktu pierwszego dopuszczenia do Wieczerzy Pańskiej, przy obniżeniu wieku tego ostatniego. Jak pokazują programy studyjne z lat 80. i 90. XX w. postulaty te nie znalazły szerokiego zastosowania w praktyce Kościołów luterańskich zrzeszonych w Federacji.

The article describes two essential threads in the discussion within the biggest international organisation of the Lutheran churches on the subject of first admission to holy communion. The discussion focuses on connecting this act with confirmation, as well as on the age of first admission to holy communion and whether this admission was to be separated from the rite of confirmation. The theological arguments raised in the study programme concerning confirmation and worship, referring mainly to the general conditions of admission to holy communion (baptism and the ability to distinguish the Lord’s body and blood), inclined towards a call to separate confirmation from the first admission to holy communion, as well as to lower the age of the latter. As the study programmes from the 80s and 90s show, the call did not find a wider application in the practice of the Lutheran churches, members of the Federation.

Artykuł „Luterańska hermeneutyka dzisiaj. Odczytanie hermeneutycznego dziedzictwa luterańskiej Reformacji w refl eksji Światowej Federacji Luterańskiej” prezentuje które elementy reformacyjnej hermeneutyki ukształtowanej przez Marcina Lutra są we współczesnej debacie w łonie luteranizmu podnoszone jako istotne dla współczesnej hermeneutyki luteranizmu. W przedstawionej analizie odwołano się do materiałów studyjnego programu Światowej Federacji Luterańskiej poświęconego hermeneutyce na przykładzie interpretacji Ewangelii Jana, Księgi Psalmów, Ewangelii Mateusza oraz listów Pawła, jaki realizowano w latach 2011-2015, materiałów przygotowanych z okazji jubileuszu 500 lat Reformacji w 2017 roku oraz dokumentu studyjnego „Na początku było Słowo (J 1,1). Biblia w życiu luterańskiej wspólnoty” z 2016 roku.

The article “Lutheran hermeneutics today. Reading the hermeneutic heritage of the Reformation in the reflection of the Lutheran World Federation” presents those elements of the Reformation’s hermeneutics shaped by Martin Luther which are raised in contemporary debate within Lutheranism as significant for present-day Lutheran hermeneutics. Th e analysis presented here refers to the LWF’s study programme dedicated to hermeneutics based on the example of the interpretation of the Gospel of John, the Book of Psalms, the Gospel of Matthew and Paul’s Letters, which was realised between 2011-2015. It also refers to the materials prepared for the jubilee of 500 years of the Reformation in 2017 and the study document “In the beginning was the Word” (Jn 1:1): Th e Bible in the Life of the Lutheran Communion” from 2016.

Artykuł „Warunki dopuszczenia do Wieczerzy Pańskiej w refleksji Światowej Federacji Luterańskiej z lat 1947-2010” przedstawia jak przebiegała dyskusja nad wymogami, których spełnienie było wymagane dla dopuszczenia do Wieczerzy Pańskiej na forum największej międzynarodowej organizacji zrzeszającej Kościoły luterańskie – Światowej Federacji Luterańskiej. Zidentyfikowano trzy warunki, których spełnienie było wymagane dla dopuszczenia do Stołu Pańskiego: 1. przyjęcie chrztu, 2. rozróżnianie ciała i krwi Pańskiej oraz wyznanie wiary, 3. spowiedź. Dwa pierwsze spotkały się z powszechnym uznaniem, ostatni był w dyskusji kwestionowany. Omówienie w artykule uzupełnia przedstawienie dyskusji na temat form dyscypliny kościelnej.

Der Artikel „Bedingungen der Zulassung zum Abendmahl in der Reflexion des Lutherischen Weltbunds aus den Jahren 1947-2010” präsentiert, wie die Diskussion über den Anforderungen, die für die Zulassung zum Abendmahl erfüllt werden mussten, in der größten internationalen Organisation der lutherischen Kirchen – Lutherische Weltbund – verlief. Drei Bedingungen, unter dessen die Zulassung zum Abendmahl möglich wäre, wurden identifiziert: 1. Annahme von Taufe, 2. Unterscheidung von Christi Leich und Blut, sowie Bekenntnis des Glaubens, 3. Beichte. Die ersten zwei wurden allgemein akzeptiert, die letzte wurde in einer Diskussion in Frage gestellt. Die Besprechung im Artikel wurde mit der Vorstellung der Diskussion über den Formen von Kirchenzucht ergänzt.

The article "Conditions of Admittance to the Lord's Supper in the reflexion of the Lutheran World Federation in 1947-2010" presents the course of the discussion on requirements, which need to be fulfilled for admittance to the Lord's Supper in the biggest international organisation of Lutheran Churches - Lutheran World Federation. Three conditions were identified, which had to be fulfilled for a person to be admitted to the Lord's Table: 1. receiving baptism, 2. being able to distinguish between Lord's body and blood, and confession of faith, 3. confession. The first two have met with universal recognition, the last one was questioned in the discussion. The article's report is completed by a presentation of the discussion regarding forms of church discipline.

Tekst prezentuje kluczową koncepcję etyki politycznej Marcina Lutra – tzw. naukę o dwóch regimentach (królestwach). W części pierwszej przedstawiono jej zasadnicze teoretyczne założenia, wskazując na rozdzielenie sposobu rządów Boga w sferze duchowej (przez zwiastowane Słowo) i świeckiej (za pośrednictwem ustanowionej władzy). W części drugiej ukazano, jak ta koncepcja była wykorzystywana przez Marcina Lutra w praktyce na przykładach jego stosunku do wojny chłopskiej, anabaptystów i Żydów. Przykłady te ilustrują proces odejścia od ścisłego rozdziału tego, co świeckie od tego, co duchowe na rzecz wzywania władzy świeckiej do zwalczania błędnowierców ze względu na szerzone przez nich bluźnierstwa. Kończąca część trzecia zaś ukazuje, jak do tego aspektu dziedzictwa Marcina Lutra odnosi się współczesny luteranizm na przykładzie debaty w łonie największej organizacji zrzeszającej Kościoły luterańskie – Światowej Federacji Luterańskiej, która odcinając się od stosunku Lutra do anabaptystów i Żydów korzysta z rozróżnienia na dwa regimenty w kontekstach hermeneutycznych i zaangażowania Kościoła w sferze publicznej.

A presentation of a key conception of the political ethics of Martin Luther – the so-called teaching about two regiments (kingdoms). The first part considers fundamental theoretical premises, indicating the division of the manner in which God rules in the spiritual domain (by the Annunciation of the Word) and the secular one (through the intermediary of established power). The second part specifies how Martin Luther applied this conception in praxis, as exemplified by his attitude towards the Peasant War, the Anabaptists, and the Jews. These examples illustrate a departure from a strict division into the secular and the spiritual for the sake of appealing to secular powers to wage a battle against those who err in view of the blasphemies propagated by them. The final, third part demonstrates the way in which contemporary Lutheranism reacts to this aspect of the Martin Luther legacy upon the example of a dispute conducted within the largest Lutheran organisation - the World Lutheran Federation – which, while disassociating itself from Luther’s attitude to Anabaptists and Jews, benefits from the distinction into two regiments in hermeneutic contexts and the involvement of the Church in the public sphere.

The main part of the article „Martin Luther’s Sermon at the Dedication of the Castle Church in Torgau” is a translation to Polish of the Reformer’s sermon on the 5th of October 1544 to the text from Luke 14:1-11. It was delivered during the ceremony of consecration of one of the first churches built from the beginning as an evangelical temple. The text of the translation is accompanied by an introduction, which discusses the church in Torgau and the circumstances of its consecration, as well as a commentary that includes the main threads of M. Luther’s sermon, which include: definition of an evangelical service, questions of remembering the Sunday, and the social structure based on various vocations.
