The topic of this article is presentation of use of the latest (non-destructive) methods of identification, recording and detailed documentation of selected terrain relics of historical fortified settlements in the Kostolianska kotlina basin and its surroundings. Comparing new knowledge obtained by means of modern methods with results of our own terrain prospecting and currently known (previously published) information outside our investigation, a new picture of individual relics is created. We deal with the prehistoric hillfort of Veľký Tribeč and relics of medieval fortified settlements – a medieval hillfort in Velčice and a medieval fortified settlement of Studený hrad.

The multi-seasonal archaeological investigation of the Lusatian hillfort and its catchment area on the hilltop and slopes of Veľký and Malý Lysec has brought interesting results in the recent years. They are mainly related to the study of material culture, identification of several settlement areas as well as the course of fortification. However, in non-destructive terrain research (i. e. identification, documenting and mapping) of immovable monuments in the forest environment and in the interpretation, using methods of remote landscape survey is almost inevitable. Airborne laser scanning and its further processing by means of an innovative method using Proxima technology is one of such methods; it has brought new knowledge in identification and interpretation of terrain relics on the studied hillfort. Comparing and evaluation of the main results of terrain prospecting and airborne laser scanning using Proxima technology is the basic aim of our article.

Rotary mills or their stone parts, i. e. quern stones and millstones, occur only exceptionally at medieval and post-medieval castles – unlike the rural environment. The quern stone discovered in 2018 in the northern part of the castle courtyard near the eastern wall of Oponice castle’s barbacan (Topoľčany district) is one of such exemplars. By its shape and size, we can assume that originally it was a La Tène quern. It was secondarily adapted and used as the rotating part of a hand mill probably during the castle’s existence. The objective of our article is to explain the function of the unusual quern stone at Oponice castle and use of grinding tools at medieval and post-medieval castles.

The northern periphery of occurrence of conquering Hungarian burials represents an important area of investigation of conquering Hungarian finds from the Early Middle Ages. Four burials discovered in Lužianky, Pri majeri site, belong to the group of finds with unmistakeable character of material culture and specific burial rite. The aim of the article is a multidisciplinary analysis of the burials in question. It includes spectrometry, whose goal is detection of composition of metal artefacts discovered in those burials. Remains of human individuals underwent anthropological analysis, animal bones were studied by means of archaeozoological analyses. Plant remains from the burials, i. e. remains of wooden artefacts, were analysed by archaeobotanical analysis. Last but not least, the relevant burials were studied from the aspect of archaeology, i. e. by means of analysis of material culture and burial rite.
