W artykule podjęto historyczno-duchową refleksję nad rolą św. Małgorzaty Marii Alacoque w rozwoju i szerzeniu pobożności do Serca Jezusa w Kościele, a także ukazano zaangażowanie apostolskie na ziemiach polskich Zgromadzenia Księży Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego, które przybyło do Polski w 1928 roku, by prowadzić działalność w oparciu o charyzmat o. Leona Jana Dehona, a także w duchu objawień Pana Jezusa świętej wizytce.

The year 2020 includes jubilee of two events, namely centenary of the canonisation of Margaret Mary Alacoque and dedication of the Polish nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus done by the Polish Bishops conference. Both occasions provide the opportunity to present the figure and charism of the holy nun of the visitation and additionally zoom in the identity and mission of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the article the author undertook the historic and spiritual reflection on the role of Margaret Mary in the growth and propagation within the Church of the devotion to the Sacred Heart and portrayed the apostolic zeal of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Polish soil. The Congregation arrived to Poland in 1928 and started the pastoral work based on the charism of Fr. Leon John Dehon and in the spirit of personal revelations that Margaret Mary Alacoque received from Jesus Christ.

In 2012 with his apostolic letter Porta Fidei, Pope Benedict XVI has set aside Year of Faith for the Catholic Church. His successor, Pope Francis who was continuing this initiative solemnly concluded this Year in 2013 on the Solemnity of Christ the King. This event provokes also consecrated persons to reflection on the issue of faith in spiritual life. Faith, which is at the same time a gift and a light offered to human being by God in the Holy Spirit in order to reach the supernatural perfection is based above all on God’s revelation. Strengthened by discursive cognition and by Christian ascetic way of life it forms the spiritual aspect of human person. Deepened in the religious consecration it make a person to resemble Jesus Christ.

The issue of the Civilization of Love and Truth that appears in the teaching of the pope Paul VI and John Paul II is deeply rooted in the teaching of the Second Vatican Council. The pope Paul VI used for the first time the expression “the Civilization of Love” in 1970. He pointed at love as the principle of human relationship and underlined its imperative character. The Civilization of Love inspired by spirituality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus reveals the truth about God and human being. John Paul II was one of the promoters of the Civilization of Love. He described its main features based on the four principals: priority of person before things, ethics before technique, “to be” before “to have”, mercy before justice. Love plays the fundamental role in this civilization. It determines the shape of various communities: the community of marriage, family, educational and professional communities. The Civilization of Love constitutes the antithesis of the civilization of death. John Paul II addressed his words especially to young people. He asked them to develop an integral concept of human being and proper hierarchy of values in various fields of social life. In the reach teaching of the pope John Paul II the Civilization of Love is bound up with the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Refleksja nad misyjnym wymiarem charyzmatu sercańskiego wpisuje się w bogaty kontekst historii oraz duchowości życia zakonnego. Na przełomie XIX i XX wieku powstała we Francji większość instytutów zakonnych męskich i żeńskich w odpowiedzi na religijne i społeczne potrzeby ówczesnej Europy. Zakładane nowe zgromadzenia zakonne ubogacały Kościół specyficznymi formami czynnego życia apostolskiego, bazując na charyzmacie i misji swoich założycieli, a także bogatej duchowości zakonów mniszych, żebrzących i kleryckich. Osobiste pragnienie połączenia kapłaństwa z życiem zakonnym stało się dla ojca Leona Dehona inspiracją do założenia Zgromadzenia Księży Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego dla dobra Kościoła oraz osobistego uświęcenia jego członków.

The reflection upon the Dehonian mission charism fits into the rich context of the history of religious life. At the turn of the 19th and 20th century most of the religious orders for men and women in France came into being, as the response to the social needs of Europe of that time. Shaping of the new religious orders enriched the Church with the specific forms of apostolic life, based on charisms and missions of their founders, and the rich spirituality of the orders of monks, beggars and clerics. Personal desire to combine both priesthood and religious life became the inspiration for Fr. Leon John Dehon to found the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart for the benefit of the Church and for the personal sanctification of its members.

The Eucharist in its fullness and richness includes all events of the history of salvation, especially those concerning the Person of the Word Incarnated. The Eucharist as a sacrament is a memory, the sacrifice of Christ and the Church, the communion with Christ and with our brothers and sisters. The worship of Christ in the Eucharist present in the tabernacle or exposed in the Blessed Sacrament shows the Heart which loves and always offers to the Father reparation for all the sins of humans all around the world. Firstly, from the historical-spiritual and theological perspectives, we speak about the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus. This mystery has been taken up and developed by the spiritual current of the French School and, above all, by the persons dedicated to the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The issue of the Eucharistic Heart was also taken into consideration by the popes during the International Eucharistic Congresses because the Eucharistic devotion embraces everything. Among those who made an important contribution to the development of this spirituality, apart from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, was venerable Father Leo Dehon, the founder of the Congregation dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The issue of the priesthood and its mission in the Catholic Church became the subject of care of the Second Vatican Council and of the Popes in the context of numerous crises and of the expectation voiced by the laity. The priest of the Sacred Heart, living the priestly charisma of his Congregation, can contribute to the fruitful revival of this Congregation only when he became the man of liturgy and mystagogy in the sacraments that he celebrates (Eucharist, penance and reconciliation), only when he became the model of Christian perfection, the witness of evangelical values and the model of life in the community of brothers.

Każdy akt poświęcenia i zawierzenia jest aktem religijnym, który zobowiązuje do realizacji podjętych wobec Boga zobowiązań. W tym kontekście pojawiło się pytanie: I co dalej? W formie sugestii zaproponowano podjęcie stosownych działań.

Taking the inspiration from the history of the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and especially from the private revelations of saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a number of national bishops conferences dedicated the local churches and whole nations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On 11th June, 2021 the Polish bishops conference renewed such act in the difficult situation of the church and the nation, moreover even in the face of weakening devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Every act of dedication and entitlements is a religious act, which obliges to the fulfilment of the commitments that have been taken. In this context the question arises, and what next? In the form of suggestions few concrete steps have been proposed.

Czy nabożeństwo i kult Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa są wciąż aktualne w misji Kościoła? Próbą odpowiedzi na to pytanie jest tekst Boże Serce w misterium swojego otwarcia na współczesny świat. Biblijne ujęcie słowa „serce” ma zasadniczo znaczenie symboliczne i przenośne. Wielokrotnie występuje w połączeniu ze słowem „miłość” zarówno w odniesieniu do Boga, jak i człowieka. Wcielony Bóg, Słowo Ojca, stał się prawdziwym człowiekiem o kochającym sercu i odkupił świat. Serce Jezusa przebite włócznią żołnierza na krzyżu jest wciąż otwarte na współczesność przez swoją miłość. Szczególne miejsce pod tym względem zajmuje szerzenie idei społecznego królestwa Serca Jezusa oraz cywilizacji miłości.

Is the reverence and cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus still topical in the mission of the Church? The text „God’s Heart in the mystery of its opening to the modern world” is an attempt to answer the question above. Biblical depiction of the word „heart” has basically symbolic and allegoric meaning. Repeatedly this word appears in connection with the word „love” both in regard to God and human. Incarnated God, the Word of the Father, became truly human with the loving heart and he redeemed the world. The Heart of Jesus pierced with the soldier’s spear on the cross is still open to the present day with his love. A special place in this regard is given to spreading the idea of the social kingdom of the Heart of Jesus and the civilization of love.
