The study examines the feeling of uncertainty and its determining factors with the help of focus groups. The analysis is based on ten focus groups, which were held in Hungary mainly in the second half of 2001. Each focus group consisted of representatives from different strata of the Hungarian society. Some focus groups were held in villages, others in Budapest and in other cities. The objective was to see how participants perceived uncertainty in their lives and in the wider world and to examine their feelings of insecurity in front of a socio-economic environment, which has undergone fundamental transformations. We investigated which specific areas, domains uncertainty and insecurity were focused around and the factors, which influenced uncertainty.
