The paper focuses on the significance of the Cyrillo-Methodian cult and it is based on the findings of the long-term research. It deals with the diffusion and maintenance of cultural heritage of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in modern Slovak history. One of the aims of the paper is to study the impact of the Cyrillo-Methodian cult within a wider context of religiosity of social groups and classes in Slovakia. It presents some specific features of the cult of Ss. Cyril and Methodius and their disciples in Slovakia, and highlights the impact of the current church-political situation on the growth of the cult and its influence on political, church and other professional institutions. Synchronic and diachronic approach used in interdisciplinary research allowed a complex view on the spread of the cult in specific historical periods in Slovakia. Historical analysis is followed by the author’s reflections on how the Cyrillo-Methodian cultural heritage relates to the religious ethical level. The Solun brothers’ mission emphasised piety (and a religious worldview per se) typical for the eastern religiosity. The study tries to define several aspects of the brothers’ work; especially those which deal with the growth of the spiritual essence of the society. As the Second Vatican Council and the documents of Pope John Paul II show, these issues remain topical and inspiring even today.

The personality of Janos Esterhazy, a Hungarian minority politician in the period of interwar Czechoslovak Republic and in the Slovak State, is not an unknown element in the history of historiography. Difficulty in evaluation of his political activities is one of the most typical examples of different views of the Hungarian and Slovak historians. This contribution points to the state of reflexion of this personality in the Slovak historiography with the professional works of historians with an attempt to interpret the historical correlations binding to Esterhazy, focusing on his post-war destiny. An overview reveals that this part of his life is expressed by Slovak historians as a tragic personal and political chapter but they proclaim that an inadequate punishment does not qualify the historians to look at him as a symbolic person without critical reflection.

The period after the Second World War is characterised by retribution – the punishment of crimes committed during the occupation. For this purpose, extraordinary people’s courts were set up also in territory of Slovakia, especially important cases were to be tried by the National Court in Bratislava. The captured Slovak collaborators, fellow nazi security personnel, etc. ended up in these courts. In particular, several trials with representatives of the Slovak State have been closely monitored by the public. The retributive judiciary in the post-war Czechoslovak Republic was created not only as a result of the efforts of the victorious powers to punish crimes committed by the Nazis and their allies during the war, but also served as a means of removing the influence of former political regime officials who served in the Czech Countries and Slovakia from 1939 to 1945. In Nitra, public attention was focused, among other things, on the trial of former Mayor of Nitra František Mojto. Mojto was sentenced to 8 months and other material penalties. The case study assesses the procedural side of the trial – its arrest, indictment, conviction, detention, as well as the causal background behind the completion of the trial.

The Byzantine mission led by St. Constantine-Cyril and his brother St. Methodius, which reached Great Moravia in 863, had several dimensions. The central theme of this work is to look at how the message of Great Moravia and the Cyrillo-Methodian cult has been spread, mainly in the modern history of Slovakia. After establishing the Hungarian Kingdom, the relations of the local church representatives towards the Methodius‘s followers weakened significantly. By the end of the 10th century, there was again pressure aimed at eradicating the residues of their activities and influence. The Cyrillo-Methodian literary tradition came to a standstill and the application of liturgical habits introduced by the holy brothers was disrupted for a long period of time. It is commonly known that the whole era of the Slovak national revival was fuelled by the development of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition. The cultural value cultivation of the Great Moravian figures in the religious, national, and cultural life of the Slovaks started already during the national revival and flourished in the 20th century. The intensity of spreading the cult of the Thessalonian saints has been different in various Slovak regions. Following the development of the Great Moravian era interpretations that were subject to political pressure, as well as to the limited actual knowledge, gave us the answers regarding the future orientation of the research.
